Job description

Overview:
The Birth Recorder/Newborn Hearing Screen Technician, under the supervision of the Director and/or Clinical Manager, is responsible for performing duties to complete the birth certificate and paternity as necessary for the Arizona Department of Vital Statistics. S/he conducts infant hearing screening tests to determine pass/fail result. Tracks test results and refers to outpatient rescreening as necessary. S/he will be working with neonates and infants, and entering test results into the hospital database. S/he will have the knowledge and skills to care for the physical and development needs of this population.
Responsibilities:
Administrative
  • Assists patients who refer from the newborn screening program to schedule an outpatient appointment for rescreen.
  • Collaborates with nursing staff, medical providers, families, and referral clinic.
  • Provides hearing screen test results to families.
  • Reviews and coordinates screening supplies, inventory and ensures resources for testing.
  • Completes Birth Certificate worksheet in its entirety for family to review, approve and sign.
  • Performs paternity inquiries for all unwed mothers.
  • Assists with paternity paperwork; notarize/witness with both parents present for form completion.
  • Sends applications and instructions for birth certificate requests to family.
  • Document fetal demise/death recording/paperwork.
  • Serves as a point of contact for the community answering questions.
  • Submits required paperwork (paternity/birth info, etc.) to the corresponding offices/facilities.
  • Provides required reading materials to patients/families regarding birth certificates and paternity.
  • Utilizes customer service to collect and input accurate information.
  • Assists families with the completion of paternity documents.

Communication

  • Provides paternity education to families.
  • Serves as liaison with funeral homes.
  • Serves as a liaison between FMC and State Birth/Paternity agencies.

Data Integrity

  • Provides accurate data entry into the EBRS, DAVE, and state hearing screen systems.
  • Maintains a copy of the evidentiary documents used to fill out the birth certificate for ten years after the date of submission.

Documentation

  • Performs electronic medical record research to gather medical risks/outcomes for mother and infant as needed for state stats.
  • Completes worksheet information via EBRS.
  • Gathers medical risks/outcomes for mother and infant as needed for state stats through the electronic medical record.
  • Documents all procedures, hearing evaluations and referrals provided within the clients medical record and/or in the hospital database for documentation.
  • Validates all deliveries are reported by comparing with electronic documentation and the delivery log daily.
  • Stores all birth logs from LDRP in the secured cabinet at all times; stores chronological logs.
Patient Care and Education
  • Reviews patient's history and appropriate data prior to initiating evaluation for hearing screen.
  • Performs newborn hearing screens and makes outpatient referrals when appropriate.
  • Follow up on patients needs.
  • Maintains department cleanliness including following procedures for clean up after treatments.

Compliance/Safety

  • Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
  • Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
  • If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
  • Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
  • Maintains timely and accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, EMR entries, and patient responses.
Qualifications:
Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required

Certification & Licensures

BLS (American Heart Association) certification- Required upon hire

Experience

Previous secretarial experience/computer skills- Preferred

Birth recording, vital statistics experience- Preferred

Bilingual- Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
