Branch Assistant
Classification: Library Assistant
Grade: 2
Position Overview: Provides friendly, high quality customer service to Library patrons in an affiliated library. Performs routine library and clerical procedures with a heavy concentration in public contact and technology.
Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision from a Branch Manager and general supervision from the Library Director.
Supervision Exercised: None
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs circulation duties using ILS system including checking materials in and out, renewals, holds, and patron registration and renewal
- Follows daily work assignments from the supervisor
- Assists in assuring accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and reshelving of materials
- Answers directional and policy and procedure questions of Library patrons
- Collects fines and fees and makes change as needed
- Answers telephones promptly
- Provides basic reader’s advisory service
- Operates a variety of standard office and library machines
- Provides patron computer assistance
- Handles routine complaints and transfers unsatisfied patrons to a supervisor, as needed
- Maintains neat and orderly appearance of the library
- Covers the operation of the library in the absence of the manager
- Regular and punctual attendance
Additional Job Responsibilities: Assists in transporting courier to assigned library; Provides coverage in other libraries, as needed; Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of public library procedures; Knowledge of the various types of library materials; General knowledge of English grammar, spelling and composition; Ability to learn Dewey Decimal system and automated circulation system; Ability to create welcoming environment for patrons of all ages; Ability to take directions and work under supervision and independently; Ability to understand oral and written instructions; Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately; Ability to type accurately; Ability to follow the Library’s approved routines; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, including supervisors; Ability to operate modern office equipment.
Education and Experience: High school graduate plus one year of library or related experience.
