Utilizes knowledge and perspective gained through personal life experiences as a person in recovery from behavioral health conditions to provide Peer Support services through direct work with participants. Conducts outreach to potential participants without health insurance who are experiencing mental illness and/or substance use problems and want treatment services. Supports consumers with mental illnesses, addictive disorders, or co-occurring disorders, in their recovery efforts, conducts education and support groups, and assists with person and family-centered treatment and transition/discharge planning. Collects and enters weekly NOMS client level data in SPARS within seven days of enrollment, every six months after enrollment, and at discharge as required for SAMHSA grant funding. Participates in performance improvement as well as quality assurance activities. Attends scheduled workshops and training meetings that are designed to maintain proficiency or increase knowledge. Participates in the agency’s all hazards continuity of operations plan. Accepts and performs additional duties not listed in job description to ensure smooth project operation.
Qualifications for position: A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) plus one year of work experience. Current Louisiana Peer Support Specialist credential required (certification must be recognized by the Louisiana State Office of Behavioral Health).
Skills and knowledge required: Communication; Customer service; Use of web-based electronic health record systems, Microsoft Office products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Zoom Meetings secure video teleconferencing software; Knowledge of current evidence-based practices in the treatment of mental illness, substance use prevention and treatment, and integrated behavioral health and primary care. Ability to maintain confidentiality of participants and records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, other staff and the general public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to complete assigned tasks and contribute to effective project operations.
