Job Summary
Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing duties specific to the Project Worth Program or the WIC Program. Performs social and emotional learning activities and developing service-learning projects for Project Worth or documents and maintains client records and
teaches classes on the advantages of breastfeeding for the WIC Program. Exercises no supervision.
This position is a "Grant Funded" position, therefore unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.
The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

Salinas WIC Clinic, 630 S. General McMullen (78237)
Work Hours
7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday; 7:45 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Wednesday; 7:45 a.m. - 12:45 p., Friday; 1st Sat of each month 7:45 a.m. - 11: 45 a.m.
Essential Job Functions
  • Teaches classes on the advantages of breastfeeding and the management of normal breastfeeding experiences.
  • Provides information and promotes breastfeeding as the normal way to feed an infant, among peers and community.
  • Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding mothers on a one-to-one basis, and provides support and follow-up as needed.
  • Documents and maintains records.
  • Attends all training provided for Peer Counselors.
  • Teaches use, cleaning, and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
WIC Program Specific Requirements (as required by grant funding requirements):
  • Must have breastfed or expressed breastmilk for at least one baby
  • Must have the ability to work outside of regular clinic hours and outside of the WIC Clinic
  • Must have taken appropriate training prior to serve as a Peer Counselor to participants
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.
  • Current or former participant in the WIC Program.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
