Class Specifications
The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform a variety of technical duties relating to the operation and maintenance of the Police Department's central computer system. The position assists with evaluating new technology, helps with establishing the technological vision for the Police Department and also helps maintain the Police Department telephone system. The position reports to the Information Systems Administrator or his designee. The principal duties of the position are performed in a general office environment.
Examples of Work Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintains Police Department computer network system (both wired and wireless) and network servers including backups, operating system upgrades, software upgrades, security procedures, and database maintenance;
• Performs installation, troubleshooting, and repair of personal computers and a variety of peripherals;
• Installs hardware;
• Helps maintain Police Department telephone system;
• Installs and configures network servers, routers, switches, personal computers and peripherals;
• Assists as needed with designs and implementations of information technology projects such as internet access, wireless networking, and intranet systems;
• Helps identify needs and recommends purchases of computer related equipment and software;
• Helps with the design and maintenance of the Police Department web site;
• Assists with technical decisions related to infrastructure/network maintenance and enhancements;
• Assists with technical support and training to Police Department employees;
• Maintains inventory of computer hardware and software.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• On call after regular work hours to respond to emergency situations as needed;
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:

• Operation processes and procedures related to the Police Department computer systems, including Microsoft operating systems, Exchange Server, SQL Server, Network Routers, virtualization, and all related software applications.
• Networking abilities related to a wired and wireless computer environment.
• Operation processes and procedures related to the Police Department telephone system;
• Computer installation, repair, and troubleshooting skills;
• Basic knowledge of web page design and maintenance.

Ability to:

• Assists with implementing large computer related projects;
• Troubleshoot computer related problems thoroughly and with exceptional ability;
• Prioritize tasks effectively both independently and at the direction of the Information System Administrator;
• Assists with designing and maintaining the Police Department's Web page;
• Operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
• Maintains and supports a multi-user computer system;
• Prepare technical reports;
• Flexibility to be able to work standard and non-standard hours, as necessary;
• Communicate effectively and establish working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• Associate degree in computer science; and
• Two (2) years experience in desktop and server support or related experience; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
