At the University of Oklahoma, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for supporting various payroll functions of the organization, as well as holding responsibility for the accurate reporting of tax and other withholdings. This position requires discretion and independent judgment as well as comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply basic accounting principles, knowledge of federal and state tax laws, university policies, procedures, and practices. Collection and analysis of data and basic problem-solving techniques is required. Work is deadline driven, and accuracy is critical.
The position will report to the Payroll Director and will work within a small team of accountants responsible for similar tasks. The position will interact frequently with the State of Oklahoma payroll department, Information Technology, Human Resources, Colleges, Budget & Financial Planning, and other academic and non-academic units.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for vendor payment review/approval
- Work with campus payroll coordinators and answer payroll and timekeeping questions
- Manage/prepare retirement statements for withholding accounts to various retirement accounts
- Assist with preparing payroll tax withholding forms, as well as 941, W-2, W-2C, and 1042, payroll reporting
- Assist with calculation and collection of employee overpayments
- Assist in all system testing
- Assist with review and approval of various personnel action forms
- Assist employees via email and/or phone with any payroll-related questions
- Review payroll deductions, garnishments, and paid leave payouts for accuracy
- Assist processors with corrections during payroll processing
- Performs other duties as assigned/required to ensure the overall success of the department

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.

Departmental Preferences:
- Advanced computer skills in MS Office, (with the ability to build and manipulate spreadsheets), accounting software and databases
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, analysis, and communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree, with preference given to business, accounting, or a related field
