Position Title: Forestry Technician AmeriCorps Member

Position Summary:
The Payette National Forest, Council Ranger District is recruiting two 680-Hour Forestry Technician AmeriCorps Members beginning June through August 2024. Members will support a dynamic reforestation program based on project needs with walk-through, seedling stocking and survival, and stake row surveys in the field.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific activities include:
· Reforestation Assessment Field Surveys (80%)
o Navigate to survey plot locations across the forest.
o Count and measure seedlings and record other observations of forest health and condition using data sheets and tablets.
o Enter data in office setting.
o Maintain tools and equipment.
· Training/Professional Development (20%)
o Potential trainings include:
§ Visit tree nursery/help with sowing or lift/pack operations.
§ Tree Climbing Training
§ Type II Wildland Firefighter/rX burning
§ CPR/First Aid
Required Qualifications:
· Willingness to work as part of a small team.
· Valid driver’s license
· Safety conscious
· Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
· Ability to hike in steep, rocky and brushy terrain.
· Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
· Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground.

Desired Qualifications:
· First Aid/CPR or higher
· Forestry/Natural Resource Interests or Major
· Land Navigation/Orienteering
· Working familiarity with tree and plant identification in the Rocky Mountains
Duty Location:
Duties are performed within Council Ranger District. Housing may be provided by the Payette National Forest and may consist of living in a government bunkhouse on a remote Forest Service work center. Transportation will be provided in the form of either a government-owned vehicle to be used by the selectee and/or riding in a shared government-owned vehicle with a crew.
Terms of Employment:
One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June through August 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
Program Benefits:
$8,500 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and a $2,626.27 education award upon completion of the 680 hours of service. This position will include a gear stipend of $194.12.
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
