Specialized Experience Requirement:
GS 6:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS 5. Examples of specialized experience may include: Used timber cruising tools and techniques to conduct certified timber cruiser activities; Recorded tree measurements, assessed quality, and determined defects; Applied silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated Timber Sale areas.
OR
One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience.
GS 7:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include: Marked trees using marking rules in areas complicated by variations in type, species composition, defect, site, age, class, etc.; Used computer programs required for data collection, cruise processing, traversing, and Global Positioning Systems(GPS); Laid out boundaries of cutting areas as outlined in the NEPA, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
