SUMMARY: The Patient Financial Services Representative is responsible for the review of Patient Financial information and communication with patients regarding any portion due from the patient for healthcare services rendered. The Patient Financial Services Representative is primarily responsible for fielding all incoming calls daily, during normal business hours. Additionally, financial counselors will respond to all financial related inquiries including billing, reviewing explanation of benefits, providing estimates, applying adjustments, ensuring appropriate patient statement flow, and upfront collections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Fields incoming calls and addresses all finance/billing related inquiries.
  • Reviews accounts to confirm insurance coverage.
  • Contacts patient and/or responsible party to obtain any missing insurance information and updates the system appropriately.
  • Discuss the patient's financial responsibility, determine if there is a need for financial assistance.
  • Based upon the evaluation of ability to pay, collects from the patient or responsible party the patient portion.
  • Properly documents all pertinent financial information and efforts in the account comments.
  • Uses best judgment to resolve patient problems or refer issues to department team lead or supervisor.
  • Seeks out guidance from leaders and teammates when uncertain of proper procedures.
  • Solicits feedback from the supervisor to assess the quality and effectiveness of work.
  • Participates in the dialogue process with team lead/supervisor regarding quality improvement.
  • Seeks out relevant training or cross training from team lead/supervisor.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment to continuous quality improvement through active participation.
  • Other duties as assigned by Team Lead or Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications


To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty to a satisfactory standard. Education: High School Diploma required. Associates Degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of experience in customer service, financial counseling, or patient accounting required. Some medical terminology familiarity preferred.

Language Skills: Demonstrated ability to exercise professional oral and written communication skills with all internal and external audiences.

Computer Skills: Experience with medical billing software systems is highly preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to prioritize and manage assigned workload; Uses time efficiently, demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; Ability to achieve and maintain a working knowledge of anesthesia billing operations and practices. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information; Adapts to changes in the work environment; Applies feedback to improve performance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time and up to the entire shift. Travel is primarily local during the day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel for conferences may be required. Air travel may also be required.
