Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY: Works collaboratively with the patient, the clinical treatment team, and various departments within the UM UCH Health System and UMMS CBO to establish a financial plan of action, which minimizes the financial liability incurred by patients, the UM UCMC Kaufman Cancer Center, and the UMMC Kaufman Infusion Center while facilitating patients’ timely access to care Collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team to direct, educate, coordinate and assist patients with applying for various financial assistance programs including hospital financial assistance, external pharmaceutical and private foundations assistance programs, and State and Federal assistance programs. As part of the Cancer LifeNet team addresses financial toxicity related cancer treatment. Demonstrates care, concern and inclusion when interacting with and informing patients of eligibility criteria. Provides patient-centered assistance in anticipating and responding to the needs of our customers.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Education & Training: Associate’s degree in business or health care related field. A combination of education and experience/training which provides required skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the job as described may be considered. Bachelor’s degree in business or related field is preferred.
Work Orientation & Experience: Experience in patient accounting, access, billing and/or coding preferred. Familiarity with approved drug compendia resources and radiation treatment planning terminology. Working knowledge of government regulations related to billing and collection procedures, and of self-pay collections, follow-up and establishing patient payment plans. Understanding of Medicare/Medicaid eligibility criteria & application process and private assistance programs within and outside of the hospital. Experience with Epic preferred.
Skills & Abilities: Demonstrated skills in a) effective critical thinking; b)strong written and oral communications; and c) age appropriate interpersonal interactions with patients ranging in age from young adult to geriatric adult d) excellent customer relations skills. Demonstrated strong knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial insurance regulations, options for un and underinsured and their relationship to verification, authorization, and payment. Basic computer skills required. Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office suite with emphasis on MS Word and MS Excel. Highly detail oriented in maintaining documentation and follow up. Demonstrated ability to a) communicate and collaborate effectively with both internal and external customers (colleagues, Medical Staff, liaisons, and patient/family); b) assess, adapt, and calmly respond to changing and/or crisis environment; c) make independent decisions consistent with current policies, procedures, and ethical standards; d) prioritize work assignments and manage time effectively to complete duties; and e) be available to adapt hours to meet the needs of all customers.
