Under the direction of a registered nurse (RN), the PCA Student assists the multi-disciplinary health care team in clinical support functions to promote a safe, compassionate Patient Care environment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In order of importance, list essential areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. 1. Assists with meeting patient direct care needs
2. Assists with equipment preparation and set up
3. Assists in providing a safe and comfortable patient/family experience
3.1. Assists with meeting patient/family comfort needs
3.2. Maintains patient and family confidentiality
3.3. Responds to patients and family requests
3.4. Seeks registered nurse assistance when necessary to meet patient/family needs
3.5. Communicates in a respectful manner
3.6. Monitors patient for safety and reports changes immediately to RN
4. Participates as part of the multidisciplinary team to meet patient/family and unit/department needs
5. Accepts delegated responsibilities that are within their defined role
6. Provides care appropriate to age group of patients on assigned unit(s) as described in the relevant unit profiles
7. Performs duties relatedto the Patient Care Associate role that are delegated by a registered nurse
In collaboration with the Nursing Director and Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nursing Practice Specialist, identifies and meets learning needs. Completes annual required training and updates knowledge through periodic in services.
Direct Patient Care:
- Assists with activities of daily living
- Performs preventative skin care
- Assists patients with positioning, turning, mobilization, ambulation
- Applies pneumatic sequential compression sleeves
- Adheres to standard precautions
- Adheres to hand hygiene guidelines
- Orients patient to surroundings
- Packs and stores patient's belongs
- Checks patients for ID bands
Patient Data:
- Records 12 lead ECG
Equipment:
§ Retrieves equipment from other areas
§ Cleans equipment between patient use
§ Sets up equipment for patient use:
o Cardiac monitors
o Portable oxygen cylinder
o Nasal cannula/face mask
o Pulse oximeter and probe
o Suction canister-liner system
Providing a Safe and Comfortable Patient/Family Experience
§ Makes occupied and unoccupied beds
§ Provides constant observation for patients at risk for injury
Operating Room
§ Demonstrates insertion of a urinary catheter
§ Demonstrates removal of a urinary catheter
§ Performs Pulse Volume Recording (PVR)
Unit Specific Skills:
§ Utilizes Pulse Volume Recorder (PVR)
§ Completes patient clip prep
§ Opens supplies onto sterile field
§ Scrubs, gowns, gloves to hold retractors
§ 2nd Scrub role
§ OR Room turnover environment of care
§ Gathers and returns supplies
§ Patient transport
§ Environment of Care OR room cleaning for case turnover per department protocol
Note:These roles are consistent with the application of professional delegation as outlined in the Board of Registration in Nursing and Nurse Practice Act.
