Major Duties
- Schedules and coordinates children’s activities and games.
- Supervises and monitors children at assigned facilities.
- Conducts regular head counts to ensure child safety.
- Supervises assigned part-time and seasonal staff.
- Enforces safety policies and procedures.
- Supervises children during field trips.
- Conducts staff meetings.
- Provides First Aid as needed.
- Supervises the on-site feeding program.
- Performs related duties.

- Knowledge of childcare principles and practices.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.

- Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Recreation Program Coordinator and/or Assistant Recreation Programs Coordinator assign work in terms of detailed and specific instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and upon completion for accuracy, adequacy, and adherence to instructions and established guidelines.

Guidelines include department policies and procedures. These guidelines are clear and specific.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of directly related childcare and supervisory duties. The unique needs of each child contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the care of children at an assigned department facility. Successful performance contributes to the safety of children.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, parents, and the public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, motivate persons, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects up to 50lbs and climbs ladders.
- The work is typically performed in an office, at recreation facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather. Work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over seasonal staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and
- Six (6) months experience planning and organizing recreation activities; and
- Six (6) months experience working with and/or supervising children.
One (1) year recent (within the past year) experience as a Seasonal Program Counselor preferred.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Employees in this position are required to obtain/maintain an American Red Cross CPR certification within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion /transfer. (See condition of employment for details.)
- Possession of a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. (PBA 9/10/01)
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 8/13/12)
- Must meet the City of Dothan’s employment physical standard, which includes drug/alcohol testing.
