The City of Anaheim Public Library is seeking Part Time Library Techniciansto provide excellent public service in a team oriented library system. We are looking for knowledgeable, positive individuals to assist at public service desks and provide public programming for children, teens and /or adults, and participate in developing relevant and innovative library services. Candidates with programming experience are highly desirable. Positions assigned to this classification work under the moderate supervision of a full time Librarian.


This is a Part Time position, typically assigned 20 hours per week with no minimum number of hours guaranteed. Candidates must have evening and weekend availability. This recruitment will fill vacancies throughout the entire Anaheim Public Library system, including the Mobile Library.

About the Anaheim Public Library
The Anaheim Public Library was recognized as the 2021 Library of the Year by Gale and Library Journal. There are ten Library outlets serving the City of Anaheim and surrounding communities. This includes Central Library, six branch libraries, the self-service branch at ARTIC Transportation Center, the Anaheim Heritage Center which houses our local history collections, the Mobile Library that serves the Community Development Block Grant neighborhoods in the city, and STEAM Adventures: Explorations on Wheels which serves the science technology, engineering, the arts, and math (STEAM) needs of the Anaheim community.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Assist library patrons with the general use of the library and respond to informational and ready reference questions.
Instruct patrons on the use of library equipment, including computers and CD Rom products.
Assist patrons in the selection of books and materials and process inter-library loan requests; may suggest materials for purchase.
Perform programs for children, teens, and adults such as Library story.
Provide direct public assistance at public service desks.
With direction, select books and other materials for featured displays; check in new books and route them to circulation.
Verify status of books ordered; assist with the de-selection and discarding of materials and complete required paperwork.
Update pre-established database with participant demographics and materials usage for story time, youth and adult services programs, gift book program, "shut-in" program, and other programs as needed.
Assist in development and implementation of library policies and procedures.
Perform general clerical, record keeping, file maintenance, typing and data processing duties.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience:
Experience performing clerical support in a public library. An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Knowledge of:
Training in the use of standard library procedures, methods and policies (including the Dewey Decimal System); principles and techniques of classification, copy cataloging, basic application software for personal computer's (Examples of software include Word, Excel, Internet); computer client-server system design; automation principles; understanding of existing system design, configuration and application purposes; data base structures and PC concepts; operating, diagnosing, troubleshooting and general maintenance and repair standards of PC's and compatibles and peripherals; basic reference tools; library technical resources and basic trouble shooting of library equipment. Working with children and students is desirable.
Ability to:
Draft memos and routine correspondence; file, maintain records, type and perform data processing duties; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; assist library patrons in material selection; apply technical knowledge of client-server systems hardware and software in the assistance and support of users; understand user needs and design systems compatible with environment; provide preventative maintenance and repair to PC hardware; train employees in system input and use; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; answer a variety of general questions regarding library use; present children's programs; conduct tours and speak in front of groups.

Supplemental Information

License/Certification Required: An AA degree is strongly preferred. A Library Technology certificate and 2 years of equivalent (public information desk) library experience may be substituted for the AA degree. Ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver's License may be required for certain job assignments.

This is a part-time position usually averaging 19 hours per week. A minimum number of hours is not guaranteed.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS – The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) to provide retirement benefits. Retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS.
Part-time eligible employees become members of CalPERS as either Classic or New members.
Part-time employees not eligible for CalPERS are required to participate in the City’s part-time 457 plan, as a replacement plan for Social Security.
