General Statement of Duties
Under general direction, a Library Technician performs a variety of difficult and complex processing of library materials; provides patrons, branch staff and volunteers with assistance in the use of library materials, in the use of library resources and in the use of library-related computer programs; performs a variety of office assistance tasks will do related work, as required.
Distinguishing Characteristic
This is a specialized job classification. Incumbents have responsibility for performing a variety of complex technical library duties in specialty areas, such as cataloging, interlibrary loans, event programming, technical support and acquisitions. Responsibilities require substantial library background and experience, or an equivalent experience relevant to their assigned duties. Incumbents are expected to be familiar with policies, functions, and operations of the County Library System. They have specialized knowledge related to their area of assignment, and they are given primary responsibility for a significant aspect of library services. Library Technician will provide lead direction for other branch staff and volunteers.

Examples of Duties
A Library Technician oversees daily operations for one or more aspects of library services:
- performs technical processing of library media and materials, including
- cataloging and classification of materials
- processing of physical materials (labeling, barcode, etc.)
- maintains records and files;
- assists patrons and branch staff with computers, microfilm machines and photocopiers
- processes interlibrary loans;
- compiles information for summaries and reports;
- trains branch staff and volunteers
- provides training and assistance for Library users
- creates instructional materials
- develops recommendations for the purchase of material for the collection (including physical and electronic resources)
- maintains the integrity of the library catalog database
- manages and schedules library deliveries between branches
- maintains and updates the library's online presence
- organizes, publicizes, and supports library programming and events for patrons
- prepares and distributes publicity information
- corresponds with public, staff and volunteers
- represents the County Library when interacting with community groups
- performs specialized functions as assigned
Knowledge of:
- Library cataloging and classification systems
- Processing and cataloging of library media
- Library procedures, methods and terminology
- In-depth knowledge of a specialized area of library services and operations, as assigned
- Maintenance of files and information retrieval systems
- Computer applications for library services
- Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Techniques and skills for training others
- Appropriate public service techniques
- Effectively represent the County Library in answering questions, responding to inquiries, providing assistance, and dealing with requests from the public, community organizations, other county staff, and other agencies.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Ability to:
- Perform specialized library duties such as interlibrary loan and acquisitions management.
- Catalog and classify library material.
- Take responsibility for one or more segments of library service without daily supervision of their work.
- Train and instruct new staff and the public on use of library equipment, including computer software and hardware.
- Interpret, explain, and apply library policies and methods.
- Gather and organize data and information.
- Prepare promotional and information materials
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Work with computerized information systems.
- Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and other staff when explaining the functions and policies of the County Library System.
- Effectively represent the County Library in answering questions, responding to inquiries, providing assistance, and dealing with requests from the public, community organizations, other county staff, and other agencies
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Typical Qualifications
Any combination of training or experience that would provide the knowledge and skills to successfully perform the listed duties is qualifying. A typical way, but not required, to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:
- Three years of general office support and public relations experience including two years of library experience comparable to that of a Library Assistant II with Siskiyou County.

Typical Working Conditions
Work is performed in both office and library environments; continuous contact with other staff and the public. Occasional trips to branch libraries in the county, and out of county for training, are considered part of the job.
