SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The City of San Marcos is currently accepting applications for a Head Lifeguard position with the Aquatics Division of the Parks & Recreation Department.
Joining the San Marcos Aquatics Division provides numerous opportunities for growth and development. As a Head Lifeguard, you will utilize your abilities to foster a positive, upbeat work environment for both staff and residents alike. This position will allow the individual to show case their leadership, communication, and outreach skills. The Head Lifeguard will be responsible for supervising other team members and working together as a cohesive unit during regular shifts, trainings, and emergencies.
Shifts: Work hours and schedule will be consistent with job duties and responsibilities to include days, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The individual must be available to routinely work 20 hours per week. All Part Time employees are limited to no more than 999 hours per fiscal year.
Steps to become a Part Time Head Lifeguard for San Marcos Aquatics Division:
- Submit a complete application by May 3, 2024.
- Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an in-person interview.
- Candidates that successfully pass oral interviews, will be invited for an in-water skills assessment that will be conducted in one of the City's aquatics facilities.
- Successfully pass a background check, drug screening, and physicalprior to starting work.
- Must attend Mandatory Orientation and Trainingtimes as following:HR Orientation3pm - 4:30pm - Wednesday, June 5, 2024Aquatics Orientation/Training8am to 2pm - Saturday, June 8, 2024
Recruitment Timeline:* There will be two rounds of application reviews *

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Duties of San Marcos Aquatics Head Lifeguards typically include:
- Open, close and supervise the facility and staff for operations
- Coach and mentor staff
- Communicate effectively with staff, peers, supervisors and guests
- Complete administrative and supervisory tasks as needed
- Teach swim lessons according to American Red Cross standards
- Interact with parents regarding the progress of participant
- Enforce required safety rules and regulations
- Prevent persons from entering into distressing and dangerous situations
- Rescue persons in distress and administer first aid and emergency care
- Ensure guests are safely participating in all aquatics activities
- Answer inquiries from the public and provide information about city programs
- Assist in overall maintenance, record keeping, and operations of the facility
- Assist in conducting special events and department programming as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
To be a Head Lifeguard you must meet the following qualifications:
- Be a minimum 18 years of age at time of hire
- Lifeguarding certification
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Water Safety Instructor certification
- Previous lifeguard and instructor experience, more is better
- First Aid for Public Safety Personnel, recommended
