JOB SUMMARY:
Part time position.
Hybrid opportunity after training. 

 
Flow Cytometry Laboratory Technologist requires an expanded knowledge and understanding of laboratory techniques and the ability to perform technical tasks, as assigned, based on specific department needs.
Employees are responsible for following all Company policies and procedures.  These policies and procedures will include adherence to regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA and OSHA, including safety standards in performing all aspects of the functions below.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
All Lab Technician/Technologist positions:
  • Have an advanced understanding of laboratory techniques with an emphasis on department specific techniques. 
  • Possess high-level oral and written communication and problem-solving skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, managers, clients, and pathologists.
  • Must be able to multi-task, accurately, and with a focus on quality.
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills and familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and the ability to self-direct.
  • Operate department specific equipment, to include daily and routine maintenance.
  • Perform daily and routine department specific QC documentation.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents and solutions; follow appropriate disposal protocols.
  • Participate in validations and department-specific goals. 
  • Successful participation in proficiency testing.   
  • Maintain department specific competency.
  • Comply with all safety procedures and participate in required training. 
  • Troubleshoot relevant equipment and technical matters.
  • Assist in other duties and projects as assigned by department manager.

DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC – Flow Cytometry
  • Responsible for Flow Cytometry sample preparation; to include, but not limited to washing samples, performing cell counts, antibody staining.
  • Responsible for accurate programming of flow cytometer to acquire samples.
  • Responsible for flow cytometric analysis for 10-color leukemia/lymphoma and PNH panels using analysis software. 
  • Responsible for report generation for pathologist review. 
 
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:
  1. In exercising these functions the employee must be able to exert up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force routinely to move objects.
  2. Employee may be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, hazardous waste and chemical fumes, so appropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times.  Certain situations require eye protection, a mask, lab coat and/or gloves. Hazardous Waste training required.
  3. Ability to pass a standard color vision test.
  4. Must be able to perform repetitive motion.
  5. Extended periods of sitting working on a computer or with samples required. 
  6. Extended periods of walking and standing while performing sample preparation. 
 
EQUIPMENT USED:
  1. Centrifuge
  2. Flow Cytometer (Beckman Coulter Navios)
  3. Sysmex cell counter
  4. Standard lab equipment (Pipettes, Microscope, slides, scalpels)
  5. Computer and ancillary equipment
  6. Flow analysis software (FCS Express)
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
At least 60 hours of relevant college courses (medical laboratory technology, chemistry, biology)
BS degree in a life science related discipline (Preferred)
Experience:
At least one year Hematology experience (Preferred)  
At least one year Flow Cytometry experience (Preferred)
MUST be qualified to perform high complexity testing (See Education requirements listed above)
Level    I: less than 5 years of relevant work experience
            II: 6-12 years of relevant work experience
            III: 13+ years of relevant work experience
            (Experience to be determined at the discretion of the Molecular Manager)
