Job description

The City of Lynden is establishing a continuous eligibility roster for the position of Part-Time Firefighter. The list will be used to fill entry level and lateral part-time vacancies occurring for at least twelve (12) months from the date the list is certified by the Civil Service Commission.


Entry Level: Less than 1-year or 1,440 hours of service (FT, PT, Vol)
Lateral: 1,440 hours of service = 1-year (FT, PT, Vol). up to top step of 4-years.


Firefighters provide emergency assistance, they protect life and property threatened by fire, explosion, hazardous materials, medical emergencies, accidents, and other hazards that may arise. Regular activities include emergency response, training, pre-fire planning, public education, life safety inspections, maintenance of apparatus, facilities, and equipment. Firefighters are assigned to a 24-hour rotating shift and may be exposed to hazardous conditions and risk of personal injury.

Fire/EMS Operations

  • Receives, relays, and responds to emergency calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  • Performs modern fire suppression and prevention, including laying hose, operating task related equipment, and participate in knock-down, containment, extinguishment, and ventilation.
  • Performs salvage/overhaul operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, removing debris, pulling ceiling, locating, and extinguishing hot spots.
  • Performs emergency aid activities, including administering first aid and providing emergency medical care to the Emergency Medical Technician-B (EMT-B) level.
  • Participates in continuing education, class topics to include firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, rescue, extrication, and other Fire/EMS related subjects.

Community Support

  • Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
  • Participates in public education programs to the community on fire drills, safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
  • Participates in life safety inspection of buildings, pre-plans, and hydrant testing.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be current on the following certifications:
    1. WA State or Nationally Registered EMT
    2. IFSAC Firefighter I, or equivalent
    3. IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations, or equivalent, OR the ability to obtain certification within first year of employment.
    4. CPAT certification
    5. Must have the ability to obtain certification of EVIP without record of suspension or revocation in any state within six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Working knowledge of driver safety practices.
  • Modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • First aid and resuscitation techniques and their application as demonstrated through State Emergency Medical Technician Certification.
  • Applicable laws, ordinances, departmental standard operating procedures, and regulations.

Skills & Ability to:

  • Support and promote and model the City's mission, vision, and core values in all aspects of job performance.
  • Work non-standard workweek.
  • Learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
  • Act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
  • Model and initiate a quality customer service attitude throughout the department and during all interactions with the public.
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States who can read and write the English language.
  • Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license and appropriate insurance at the time of hire (or within 30 days of start date) for work-related travel.
  • Must have ability to provide 36-month motor vehicle record.
  • Must pass appropriate background checks, including appropriate work-related physical examination.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.

  • Current Washington State or National Registry EMT Certificate
  • IFSAC Firefighter I Certificate, or Equivalent.
  • Current and Valid CPAT Certificate (within one year of job announcement date)
  • 36-month Motor Vehicle Record (see the DOL website (on how to obtain this record)

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination process may consist of the following for eligible applicants:

  1. FIRE TEAM written examination through the National Testing Network (NTN).
  2. Oral Board Interviews: Candidates from the NTN list who have a completed City of Lynden application (including required certifications) will be scheduled for oral board interviews. Oral Board Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Applicable preference points will be applied prior to selection.
  3. Chief's Interviews: Applicants from the Oral Boards will be invited for a Chief's Interview tentatively scheduled to begin Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
