Job Description:
We are seeking a Pet Care Associate to walk and supervise groups of up to 6 dogs in the lower Westchester, NY area, primarily on Mondays, Fridays, and some weekends. Separately, we will be looking for a mid-week walker! If you have a love for dogs, enjoy the outdoors, and have excellent time management skills, this position is perfect for you.
Responsibilities:
- Dog Walking: Provide exercise and enrichment while ensuring the safety of multiple dogs, using balanced training techniques.
- Pack Management: Maintain control and harmony within the dog pack and with any passing animals or humans, intervening when necessary to prevent conflicts.
- Exercise and Play: Offer tailored exercise and play opportunities to promote mental stimulation and socialization while keeping dogs safe in varying weather, road, and trail conditions.
- Safety and Security: Keep a watchful eye for hazards or aggressive/reactive behavior, taking proactive measures to minimize risks.
- Client Communication: Provide timely updates to clients on their dogs' well-being, behavior, and any notable incidents.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of walks, including durations, distances, behavior, and incidents.
- Health and Hygiene: Ensure cleanliness of any place the dogs will access. This includes vehicles, private residences, public or private venues, or trails. You will be expected to pick up waste, avoid potential hazards, and monitor dogs for signs of illness or injury.
- Equipment Maintenance: Inspect and maintain walking equipment, reporting any issues.
Qualifications:
- Valid Driver's License: A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.
- A background check and references are also required.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to walk on uneven trails and varying terrain for extended periods (30-120 mins per day) and handle dogs of various sizes and strengths. You should be able to lift large dogs when needed.
- Experience: Prior experience working with dogs is preferred but not required.
- Communication Skills: Strong communication skills in written and spoken English. Fluency in Spanish is a bonus.
- Time Management: Punctuality and reliability in maintaining a consistent schedule.
- Animal Behavior Knowledge: A basic understanding of dog behavior and pack dynamics is recommended but not required. We do not use outdated methods like “alphas” or any dominance tactics.
- Responsible and Trustworthy: Ability to maintain control and be entrusted with the well-being of clients' pets.
