GENERAL JOB SUMMARY
Prepares all meals. Apportions servings, and performs related duties as assigned by supervisor.
PERFORMANCE
ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR:Handling and preparation of food in accordance with sanitary regulations. Preparation of food that is palatable and appetizing in appearance. Meeting meal schedules, avoiding food waste, care of cooking equipment and always keep kitchen neat and clean.
QUALIFICATION
EDUCATION:There are not any formal requirements for education, but must be able to read, write and follow oral instructions and participate in training provided by the nursing home. Job knowledge: 1st be able to cook a variety of foods in large quantities and be familiar with seasoning required and cooking time involved. Plus have a firsthand knowledge of cooking characteristics of various cuts of meat, and know names and contents of food when buying.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Stands and walks short distances most of the working day. Stands and reaches lifts and carries food and kitchen equipment. Tastes and smells food to determine quality and palatability. Hand dexterity to prepare food. Special demands: Must have a genuine interest in geriatric care. Willingness to work for best interest of institution. Ability to supervise and work cooperatively with others. Considerable initiative and judgement involved in setting up meals, seasoning foods, estimating food requirements, utilizing left overs and presenting food in an attractive and palatable manner. Works under general supervision, follows standard menus but can make independent decisions relative of meal to be served and method of preparation. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more.
