Job description

The Contract Attorney is responsible for providing part-time support to our Legal Department with oversight reviewing and approving vendor contracts, legal documents, and performing legal research as needed. The Contract Attorney is primarily responsible to produce and approve vendor contracts which are fair to the Credit Union. They will work closely with the department Paralegal in order to produce high-quality work products that are accurate, complete and professionally presented.

Work Arrangement- This position requires the ability to work approximately 20 hours per week between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Role is hybrid with minimum of one day/week commitment to be onsite at East Lansing headquarters.
An offer of employment with MSU Federal Credit Union and affiliates is contingent upon the agreed work arrangement (onsite/hybrid/remote) and work location. MSU Federal Credit Union may or may not be able to accommodate temporary or permanent changes to work arrangements or allow employment outside the city and/or state of residency in which the new hire resides at the time of offered employment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Works closely with the Legal Department's Paralegal in the legal review and revise of all contracts and non-disclosure agreements on behalf of the Credit Union
  • Reviews and approves modifications to standard contract provisions favored by the Credit Union
  • When necessary, perform Lexis Nexis legal research of statutes, cases, and regulations.
  • Stays informed of all laws, regulations, and other information that affect the Credit Union's operations including NCUA, CFPB, FFIEC and other regulatory

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Juris Doctorate and licensing to practice law in Michigan or capable of being licensed in Michigan required.
  • 5-10 years of experience working as a licensed attorney in areas of commercial
  • Ability to build and foster teamwork.
  • Ability to analyze and revise terms and conditions of commercial contracts.
  • Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Ability to write succinctly and accurately.
  • Effective verbal and written communications, including active listening skills and skills in presenting findings and recommendations.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure while prioritizing and meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to manage changing volume of work and flexibility to process last minute requests.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with members, co-workers, staff, and external contacts, and work effectively in a professional team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Michigan and Federal laws and regulations affecting financial institutions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal concepts and methodologies and their application in a financial environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal reference sources including Lexis Nexis and/or other commonly used legal research procedures and methods sufficient to locate and analyze pertinent statutes, court decisions, legal opinions, and other legal documents.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment, and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of office area.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure.
  • This position is able to work in hybrid or onsite working arrangements.
