Description
The Community Services Department is currently accepting applications to fill two Park Trails Assistant (Extra Help) vacancies in Santa Barbra at the Hot Springs Trail. This is a great opportunity for weekend and evening work. This position will be communicating trail usage rules and regulations with trail users and enforcing rules and regulations. These positions are in the Park Ranger Trainee job classification.
NOTE: This is a Civil Service Rule (CSR) 905 Extra Help Appointment. An extra-help appointment is defined as an appointment made to a non-regular, non-permanent position established on a temporary basis to meet peak loads, unusual work situations, seasonal and recurrent work, intermittent assignments, or emergencies.
Examples of Duties
For this role, candidates will focus on the following duties:
  • Provides information and notifies visitors about high fire risk and that open flames are prohibited on the trail, trail and parking lot hours, parking restrictions.
  • Monitors the Hot Springs Trailhead and promotes trail and park safety and security.
  • Interprets and enforces rules and regulations and ordinances by giving warnings and may also issue citations (after receiving appropriate training).
  • Contacts a Park Ranger Supervisor or the Sheriff Deputy non-emergency dispatch line for any problems or concerns; requests assistance when necessary from public safety and ambulance services; contacts 911 for emergencies.
  • Completes incident reports and other forms and tracks trail use data.
  • Kind and courteous communication when contacting the public.
  • Collects and removes debris, trash and litter.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Employment Standards
Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required. PC 832 Certification desirable. In order to issue citations, successful candidates may be required to complete a law enforcement procedures (PC 832) course certified by the California Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
Ability to: Learn the use and routine servicing of hand tools, power tools and light equipment used in groundskeeping; learn the basic materials and methods used in groundskeeping and cleaning; understand and follow simple oral and written instructions; deal tactfully and effectively with the public; work effectively with and provide service to a variety people from different backgrounds; learn and apply diversity, equity, and inclusion principles; learn, understand and convey park rules and regulations; to use, record, and compile data on an Excel Spreadsheet; to total and compute averages of recorded data on Excel Spreadsheet.
Supplemental Information
Incumbents are required to work: flexible shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends; and may be exposed to unpleasant field conditions including rainy, cold, windy, or hot weather.
