General Summary



Performs a variety of semi-skilled manual labor in support of a variety of tasks in connection with the maintenance and construction of City parks, properties, trails, cemeteries, streetscapes, facilities and other sites under City obligation.

Essential Functions

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:


  • Help to maintain a variety of outdoor grounds facilities, park sites, cemeteries, streetscapes, turf and garden plots by power trimming and mowing; fertilizing, aerating, top dressing, cleaning, and removing trash and debris from outdoor recreation sites and preparing recreation areas, e.g., softball fields, for public use.
  • Shovel and plow snow, either by hand or with a vehicle, to clear parking areas and walkways.
  • Maintain public facilities for the City; cleaning, and securing, making minor repairs to equipment and facilities; assist with minor plumbing, carpentry and basic repair, as necessary.
  • Maintain the two City owned cemeteries, watering, pruning, internment, and exhumation.
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies necessary to complete assignments such as: chemical fertilizer, trash, lawn mowers, weed eaters, mulch, and topsoil.
  • Must have general understanding to successfully apply certain agronomic and horticultural practices in the field.
  • Must be able to apply certain technical and specialized skills in the field with little supervision.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies during off-duty hours.
  • Position may involve on-call duty which requires working weekends on a rotating basis and working all hours during emergencies.
  • Understand irrigation practices, such as head replacement, valve replacement, line repair, component, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • May operate complex equipment.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.

Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: Some knowledge of landscaping techniques, basic mechanics, carpentry, plumbing and other repair techniques; of common tools used in construction and maintenance work; basic knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
SKILL: Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools and to operate light equipment and to drive various types of trucks.
ABILITY:Ability to perform a variety of manual labor; construction, irrigation repair tasks and turf maintenance; willingness to perform tasks outdoors in a variety of climate conditions; to perform physical tasks required of assignments; to understand and carry out oral and written assignments; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees, and the public.
TRAINING: HS diploma or equivalent required or will consider equivalent combinations of training and experience that provide evidence that the applicant/employee possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum One (1) year experience in park maintenance or similar experience.
Eligibility Requirements:

  • First Aid/CPR Certification (keep current or obtain within first twelve months for new hires)
  • Defensive Driving (keep current or obtain within first twelve months for new hires)
  • Complete in-house pesticide technician training (must obtain within first 12 months and keep certifications current.)
  • Trenching/Shoring/Confined Space Certification (must keep current or obtain within first twelve months for new hires)
  • Storm Water Training (must obtain within first year.)

Training required to move to the Parks Maintenance Technician II:
  • Obtain all of the requirement stated above.
  • Minimum overall successful rating on annual Performance Appraisal.
  • 18 months in the Parks Maintenance I position.
And
Must also obtain twoof the following certifications before eligible for Tech II position*(2% pay accelerators included upon completion of each certification, 1% for additional pesticide categories):
  • Pesticide Applicator License (General and must include turf, ornamental, or right-of-way categories)
  • Playground Certification
  • Certified Irrigation Contractor
  • Certified Arborist
  • Master Gardener
  • CDL License Class B, Including Airbrakes
  • Certified Landscape Technician (must obtain one of the following)

A certificate in one of the areas listed below is equal to one of the categories listed above. And a 2-year degree in one of the areas listed below is equal to two of the categories listed above.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Colorado Class "R" driver's license with a safe driving record.
