Paper Mill - Operations Manager

Title: Operations Manager

The Operations Manager is responsible for managing mill equipment - including two paper machines, with the intent of maximizing productivity of the department. Other responsibilities extend to capital improvement projects, training, maintenance, and employee management. Ensures safety, productivity, quality, and environmental and cost goals are met. The ideal candidate must be a proven leader, with a strong knowledge of the paper making process, paper machines, supporting equipment and paper making skills.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Integral team member of the mill outage planning. Provides input and oversight for routine/annual outage planning, coordination, scheduling, and execution to ensure the outage for area of responsibility Stock Prep, Paper Machine, etc.) is completed on time and within budget.
• Identify and plan for capital improvement projects.
• Determine training needs and administer appropriate training programs for departmental employees.
• Provide leadership coverage during the Superintendent’s absence.
• Drive a culture of safety and environmental excellence through critical hazard identification, risk reduction, and risk mitigation.
• Drive process and equipment modifications that result in improved product quality, reduced variation, and higher customer satisfaction.
• Participate in on-call rotation coverage.
• Maintain an environment of integrity, respect, accountability and excellence.
• Empower and engage teammates to improve department performance.
• Identify developmental needs and facilitate training of personnel.
• Plan and control production performance
• Monitor compliance with standard operating procedures.
• Coordinate efforts with maintenance and technical departments
• Develop and maintain methods for tracking and reducing operational costs.
• Develop and execute strategic plans to increase overall machine efficiency.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred (Paper Science, Chemical, or Mechanical). Candidates with commensurate practical paper making skills and leadership experience will be evaluated.
• Minimum of 3+ years of direct paper machine operations experience (example – technical assistant/process engineer for operations, paper machine shift supervisor/manager, paper machine assistant superintendent, paper machine superintendent).
• Ability to work with and lead cross functional teams – operations, mechanical, E&I, engineering, purchasing, shipping, sales, contractors, etc.
• Desire to grow upwards in the organization – ability to promote.
• Minimum of five (3) years of experience and leadership responsibilities within the paper and pulp industry, preferably in union environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Exposure to outdoor elements when traveling on foot between facilities.
• Wear personal protective equipment as required.

Pay: From $150,000.00 per year
