Summary
The PALS (Play And Live Stronger) Instructor is responsible for supervising and leading age appropriate activities for children kindergarten through sixth grade. The PALS Instructor will also assist the PALS Supervisor in setting up the rooms, planning programs and activities, and completing cleaning responsibilities.

Reports To: Recreation Supervisor - PALS
Qualifications
The PALS Instructor must be at least 16 years of age. Applicants must enjoy interacting and playing with children. Must be certified in CPR or become certified within 60 days of hire.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Supervise all age levels of children. Provide continuous supervision. Children are never to be left alone.
  2. At the start of the shift, set up room for children. Pull out and lower benches and tables from the wall unit and toy storage units as needed. At the end of the shift, put away benches and tables into the wall unit.
  3. Clean tables daily. Maintain cleanliness of supplies and equipment.
  4. Administer first aid when necessary. Complete necessary accidents and incident forms.
  5. Perform the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, the Employee Personnel Policy Manual, and PALS Staff Handbook.
  6. Instructors are expected to work all shifts as assigned and arrive at work on time.
  7. Instructors are expected to be physically active by participating in games and playing with children in the gym and on the playground.
  8. Interact with children providing positive reinforcement and encouragement during activities, homework, and recreational activities.
  9. Re-direct children's behavior as needed. Instructors must be accountable for participants' safety and behavior at all times.
  10. Establish and maintain ongoing communication with children's parents.
  11. Communicate to your supervisor any program changes or obstacles.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
  1. Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental?specific safety rules.
  2. Exercise District's safety and risk management practices by following Risk Management Manual, Emergency Response Plan, and OSHA Compliance Policies
  3. Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 40 pounds or more.
  4. Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.
  5. Attends required safety program, in?service education meetings, and mandatory VHPD training.
  6. Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
  1. Must work closely with co-workers, children and parents.
  2. Experiences ongoing concerns for children's safety.
  3. Must have ability to deal with children under stressful situations.
  4. May have to work under stressful situations when First Aid or CPR is required.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
  1. Lifting is occasional, usually 40 pounds or less.
  2. May involve significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some climbing on/under playground equipment, balancing, and frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
  1. May be required to work during various weather conditions, including hot temperatures, snow, and rain.
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS
  1. Must use good judgment at all times and be aware of immediate surroundings.
  2. Must be able to respond to and handle children's behaviors in a positive, appropriate manner.

  • Facility rental - discount of 50% (reservation cannot be made more than 30 days prior to the rental date and the employee is responsible for the rental set-up and clean-up).
*Immediate Family include employee's spouse and children under age 22
