Job Description
Perianesthesia nursing encompasses the care of the patient and family/significant other along the preianesthesia/periprocedural continuum of care:
Preanesthesia level of care
- Preadmission- Interviewing and assessment of the patient to identify potential or actual problems.
- Day of Surgery/Procedure-validate information, reinforcing perioperative teaching, providing nursing care to complete preparation for the surgical experience.
Postanesthesia level of care
- Postanesthesia Phase 1-providing nursing care immediate postanesthesia period.
- Postanesthesai Phase 2-this phase focuses on preparation for care at home.
Major Duties/ Critical Tasks:
Preanesthesia nursing role
- Conducts preoperative interview and patient teaching which includes the following: health history, confirms that the patient understands the procedure scheduled, what to do the night before surgery, that the patient must have a family member or friend with then and that the patient cannot drive after the procedure.
- After review of health history evaluation by anesthesia will be determined.
- Day of Surgery review health history, provide additional preoperative teaching that needs to be done and assess patient and start IV.
- Hand off communication between Pre-op nurse and OR nurse before the patient is taken to the operating room.
Postanesthesia nursing role
- Hand off communication between OR nurse and PACU phase 1 nurse after the surgery has been completed.
- Assesses patients recovering from anesthesia and using critical thinking skills make appropriate nursing decisions based on the patient’s needs.
- Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures performed and types and uses of various anesthetic agents by making appropriate nursing assessment.
- Pain management
- Transfer patient to Phase II when discharge criteria from Phase I is met.
- Prepares patient and significant other for discharge with postoperative instructions and teaching.
- Follow-up phone calls the next day to address any issue or concern the patient or significant other may have.
Additional duties
- Adheres to the Center’s policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing practice.
- Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner in the EPIC computer system.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the age specific needs of the center’s patient population when providing care and education on care.
- Evaluates outcomes of care and adjusts nursing care processes to meet the patient’s individual needs.
- Uses critical thinking skills to evaluate patients and take emergency actions when needed to ensure patient safety.
- Participates in staff development, continuous quality improvement activities, and regulatory requirements.
- Restocks area with applicable supplies at the end of the day.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Protects the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information.
- Qualifications:
- Current and valid licensure as a Registered nurse
- Minimum two years’ experience in PACU, ED or ICU setting
- BLS
- ACLS and PALS within 2 months of hire
