The Role
The Support Center is a new entity type and the first of its kind in New York City offering a comprehensive range of mental health and substance use disorder services to individuals referred by NYPD. The center will provide 24/7/365 client-centered, short-stay, engagement, and stabilization/treatment alternatives for people who are experiencing non-emergency psychiatric symptoms, drug use, and/or non-emergency medical issues. The Samaritan Daytop Village’s Support Center will provide true integration of Mental Health, Substance Use, and Medical Care to individuals in need of support.
Under the general supervision of the RN and/or Physician, the Licensed Practical Nurse-LPN will support providers in the provision of care including recording vital signs, administering medications, discussing chief health concerns, performing testing, and assisting with procedures and documentation. Assesses, plans, evaluates, and delivers nursing care in collaboration with RN and/or Physician. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.
What You Will Do
- Assists with patient care including checking vital signs, blood draws, obtaining other specimens for laboratory analysis and culture as ordered by the medical provider, discussing chief health concerns, and administering injections and immunizations.
- Observes, measures, records, and reports data relating to guests' mental and physical status.
- Administers medication as prescribed.
- Records and reports any spillage that may occur while dispensing a Guest’s medication.
- Participates in the ongoing assessment of Guests’ needs.
- Maintain inventory of stock medications.
- Under the supervision of an RN physically counts medication at the end of day closing.
- Interviews Guests and records data for admissions or discharge and enters data in the computer system.
- Follows orders of physician and registered nurse in providing care.
- Records and reports patient goals for consideration in a treatment/recovery plan.
- Conducts orientation sessions for Guests and families.
- Reinforces instructions given to Guests by RN or Physician and/or assists and participates in health teaching and counseling to Guests.
- Places phone calls to pharmacies to order prescriptions.
Who You Will Be
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Graduate of a formal Technical or Vocational LPN Program.
- NYSED LPN license.
- BLS certification.
- At least One (1) year experience as an LPN working with clients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and/or Serious Mental Illness (SMI).
- Available to work a flexible schedule as needed in response to participant and staff needs.
- Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR.
