Job Description
As an Outside Plant Engineer for the Hunter Communications Engineering team, you’ll work closely with
our project managers, service delivery coordinators, and internal and external stakeholders to plan fiber
optic construction projects, solve problems, and help drive the rapid buildout of our top-tier fiber optic
network and services to homes and businesses in the Willamette Valley.

ensuring that small details are not overlooked and going the extra mile to help us keep our promises to
our customers. They are comfortable with completing work tasks within specified timelines and
consistently meeting key performance indicators. We’re looking for a lifelong learner, ready and willing
to expand their capabilities by learning new skills, technologies, and tools.
Your job duties will have you working in person at our McMinnville, Oregon office with frequent trips to
worksites and occasional travel to other regional Hunter Communications offices as needed to meet
business needs. The schedule for this full-time position is 5 days a week, from Monday to Friday, with
overtime as needed to meet project deadlines.
Job Responsibilities
Your duties as an Outside Plant Engineer will involve a variety of responsibilities and tasks, but the
essential functions of your role will require:
- Designing aerial and underground fiber routes for greenfield and brownfield construction, plant extensions, repairs, relocations, and upgrades; performing pre-survey site walks; surveying utility poles; designing access points for locations passed along the route.
- Preparing and managing project documents including: cost estimates, scope of work, purchase orders, utility locates, staking sheets, traffic control plans, permits, and easements.
- Successfully balancing workload in line with departmental priorities, documenting all relevant information, and contributing to internal and customer-facing project coordination meetings.
- Collaborating with internal and external resources to actively develop resolutions to project obstacles and unexpected challenges; addressing customer, regulator, or public concerns.
- Actively engaging with departmental continuous improvement processes, learning new technologies, tools, and skills while adapting to changing conditions.

- Demonstrated Outside Plant Engineering experience; working knowledge of NESC standards, joint use requirements, and relevant permitting processes is strongly preferred.
- A successful record of rapidly developing and deploying creative and financially responsible solutions supported by sound engineering and operational practices.
- The ability to occasionally ascend and descend ladders and stairs and to frequently move about on all ground surfaces in outdoor weather conditions. Ability to occasionally work in confined spaces such as crawlspaces and attics by crawling, bending, reaching, twisting.
- The ability to read, understand, interpret, and analyze written drawings, diagrams, and maps.
- Superior teamwork and problem-solving skills, ability to have open and honest conversations with stakeholders while maintaining a high degree of professionalism.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a talent for communicating effectively at all levels and in all circumstances.
- Experience in the use of computer drafting, mapping, and GIS platforms as well as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- A commitment to a strong workplace safety culture, adherence to policies and best practices.
- A valid driver’s license – drivers of company vehicles are subject to a pre-employment drug screen, MVR check, and random testing.
