At Mahaska Health, the primary role of the Pharmacy Technician is to perform many pharmacy-related functions under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and perform administrative functions of the department that do not require professional judgment and extensive technical training.
Essential Job Functions include but are not limited to:
- Read and interpret physician's medication orders.
- Data entry, insurance adjudication, troubleshooting Prior Authorizations and other insurance rejections.
- Answer phone calls from patients, and prescribers and provide customer service.
- Aid in filling, processing, and dispensing medications.
- Re-package and label medications.
- Adhere to safety practices to ensure quality care for patients.
- Provide customer service by answering phone calls and emails promptly and courteously.
- Triage requests and prioritize them.
- Makes requisitions for drugs and supplies with professional guidance from the pharmacist.
- Orders, receives, and maintains inventory of drugs and chemicals, and ensures their security.
- Helps maintain an orderly, clean environment including cleanliness of pharmacy stock and supplies.
- Enters data into the computer system, recording prescriptions, purchase orders, stock orders, requisitions, and disbursements.
- Under the direction of the pharmacist, remove unneeded or outdated drugs from stock and prepare for return or disposal.
- Performs general clerical duties for the department.
- Prudent use of financial resources and good stewardship in utilizing Mahaska Health Partnership supplies and services.
- Conduct self in accordance with Mahaska Health Partnership's confidentiality policy; ensuring to follow all MHP training guidelines in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with employees, visitors, medical staff, and patients, keeping in mind the person’s unique needs within their age category (refer to Mahaska Health’s Age Specific Standards of Care Policy).
- Ability to deal with confidential information.
- Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Attend meetings, as requested.
- All other duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements include but are not limited to:
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
- Successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician training course or a minimum of one year of on-the-job training.
- Current registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a certified Pharmacy Technician
- Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
- Required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at time of hire or attend within 6 months of start date.
- Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
