- Job Summary
- Codes and abstracts hospital outpatient records, to include ER and outpatient surgical records, 23-hour observation records, and miscellaneous outpatient visits, for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations according to diagnosis (es), CPT-04 and HCPCS classification system, operation (s), and procedure (s) using ICD-10-CM classification system; analyzes and reviews records for completeness; and coordinates the follow-up on deficient/delinquent records.
- Job Specifications
- EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma required. Graduate of an AHIMA approved AS or BS degree program preferred. Required licensure/certification; CPC/CPC-H, CCA, CCS, RHIT or RHIA. Knowledge of computerized encoding and grouping preferred.
- ICD-10-CM Coding (will provide on-the-job training).
- Medical terminology.
- General knowledge of hospital and hospital functions.
- CPT-4 Coding (will provide on-the-job training).
- A preference for routine, concrete and organized activities, but must also possess the ability to adapt to changes resulting from emergencies, changes, volume of work, deadlines, etc.
- Ability to deal with hospital and physician office staffs diplomatically, tactfully, and on equal basis.
- Good knowledge of use and manipulation of data.
- Ability to listen.
- General knowledge of financial and computer systems.
- Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g. developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patient with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
