JOB SUMMARY Outdoor Education Specialist ... JOB DESCRIPTION
Outdoor Education Specialist position This role will be guiding students on outdoor/woods trips teaching them all listed below.
Trips will be in NH and MA.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to) :
Teach Outdoor Education curriculum (e.g., how to pack a backpack, how to use map and compass, Leave no Trace principles)
Attend and actively participate in all pre and post trip meetings
Assist with trip planning and logistics
Serve as MIT onsite representative with students, vendors and partners
Prepare and submit post-course reports in a timely manner
Submit incident/accident reports with proper documentation promptly.
Stay updated on outdoor trends and practices
Maintain all certifications and training. (CPR, First Aid, AED, Wilderness FA)
Adhere to MIT policies, procedures, and industry best practices on and off campus
Assisting with the development of an Outdoor Education resource library
Engage and motivate student participants (beginner to advanced level participants)
Scout, inspect, and prepare course locations/sites and necessary equipment, as needed
Commit to teaching schedule for a minimum of 1 year
Follow all MIT Physical Education and Wellness policies and procedures
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree
AED/CPR/FA certification
Wilderness First Aid or willing to obtain
Valid Driver's license
DAPER/MIT van certification training
Previous experience in Outdoor Education and leadership
Experience teaching outdoor skills related to backpacking (ex. trip planning, leave no trace principles and fitness preparation).
Direct experience and awareness of safety and risk management in Outdoor Education
Must complete training and adhere to all MIT/DAPER Emergency action plans
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Requirements
Familiarity with backpacking locally and in the surrounding area
Experience teaching in higher education
Experience leading backpacking trips, clinics and courses
Ability to foster a welcoming environment to diverse participants
