Department or School Site There are currently 5 vacancies located at Canyon Creek Outdoor
Education Center, 41600 Lake Hughes Rd, Lake Hughes, CA 93532.
Daily working hours are variable and may include weekend shifts.
Overnight sleeping facilities are provided at the Center for staff. Please
be advised that individuals appointed to vacancies may be provided the
opportunity to work at other Outdoor-Education Camps. More information
about the Canyon Creek Outdoor Education Center and the other camps
is provided below.
Canyon Creek Outdoor Education Center is an 83-acre outdoor
education center located in the city of Lake Hughes adjacent to the
Angeles National Forest. Canyon Creek will offer a Monday through
Friday, 5-day/4-night, Outdoor Education learning experience for students
in fourth and fifth grade. Alternatively, a 3-day/2-night weekend program
will also be available to students in fourth through twelfth grade. Activities
and curriculum are designed to maximize the venue’s unique features,
including a small pond, hiking trails, swimming pool, ropes challenge
course, sports facilities, bicycle track, archery, and an outdoor
amphitheater.
Camp Skyhook at Clear Creek is a 40-acre Outdoor Education center
located above the La Cañada/Flintridge area in the Angeles National
Forest. Clear Creek offers a 5-day/4-night Outdoor Education Camp for
students in fourth and fifth grade. Alternatively, a 3-day/2-night weekend
program is available to students in fourth through twelfth grade. Field
studies to analyze the health and vitality of the site’s three
ecosystems—alpine, riparian, and chaparral, are made possible by the
creek and trails on site. The Night Sky Study curriculum allows students
to understand the Earth’s place in the galaxy and the importance of
natural systems that make life possible. Overnight sleeping facilities are
provided at the Center for staff.
Point Fermin Outdoor Education Center is a 2.5-acre Outdoor Education
center located on the San Pedro peninsula. This science camp offers an
innovative 3-day/2-night outdoor learning experience for students in
fourth and fifth grade. A 3-day/2-night weekend program is also available
to students in fourth through twelfth grade. This seaside venue shares all
the wonders of the California coast with children – many of whom have
never seen the ocean in person. The Science at Sea program allows
students to transform a Brigantine Tall Ship into a research vessel,
among other activities. Overnight sleeping facilities are provided at the
Center for staff.

Job Duties/Responsibilities A Naturalist conducts educational programs in environmental education,
natural science, and human relations for students; conducts hikes and
campfire programs; and performs various manual duties related to center
facilities, animals, trails, and supplies at an outdoor-education center.
Typical Duties Include:
- Presenting instructional programs to students regarding environmental
education, natural science, human relations, and STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics) curriculum by demonstration
and instruction in a natural setting.
- Obtaining data and preparing training aids for courses in astronomy,
botany, ecology, geology, hydrology, meteorology, mythology, and
zoology.
- Conducting hikes, tours, campfire programs, and craft classes.
- Orienting teachers, parents, and students to the Outdoor Education
facility.
- Coordinating instructional presentations with teachers and
administrators.
- Preparing and maintaining exhibits.
- Clearing and developing new trails and maintaining existing trails in safe
condition, including clearing chaparral, removing weeds and bushes, and
cutting tree branches.
- Feeding and caring for animals.
- Assisting in maintaining the center in a safe, clean condition and in
opening and closing the center.
Minimum Requirements EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational
proficiency, and successful completion of 9 semester units or equivalent
quarter units of coursework, at a recognized college or university, in one
of the natural or physical sciences, or education. Graduation from a
recognized college or university with a bachelor’s or associate degree in
the above areas is preferable.
EXPERIENCE:
Six months of paid experience or verifiable volunteer experience in
developing or conducting nature study programs or youth group
activities. An additional 3 semester units or equivalent quarter units of
coursework, at a recognized college or university, in one of the natural or
physical sciences, or education may be substituted for the
aforementioned required experience.
SPECIAL:
A First-Aid Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or
American Red Cross must be obtained within 60 days after appointment
and must be kept valid during the term of employment. Water Safety
Instructor and CPR Certificates are preferable.
Desirable Qualifications The ideal candidate has experience conducting Outdoor Education and
environment education programs for school-aged children, both on land
and on water. The ideal candidate has a passion for instructing topics
related to Climate Change and environmental principles and concepts.
The ideal candidate is a strong team player, able to foster great working
conditions with both children and adults from various backgrounds, and
possesses the skills required to maintain cordial and professional
relationships when living in close proximity to other Outdoor Education
staff.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment
