Cayuga Medical Center is seeking a dedicated and experienced Orthopedic Coordinator to join our team. As a healthcare facility, we are committed to providing exceptional patient care and fostering a collaborative work environment. The Orthopedic Coordinator will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our orthopedic department, optimizing patient flow, and coordinating various aspects of orthopedic procedures. The Orthopedics Coordinator is responsible for facilitating, coordinating, and evaluating unit activities for the provision of quality patient care within the framework of the mission, values, and vision of the Cayuga Health System.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Proactively evaluates the surgical schedule using evidence-based standards to assure care is medically necessary and delivered at the most appropriate level of care.
  • In collaboration with orthopedic team lead, anticipates needs and provides equipment and supplies based on patient age, health status and proposed procedure.
  • Collaborates with the orthopedic team lead to thoroughly review surgical trays and equipment the day before procedures to verify their processing and availability, ensuring they are correctly allocated to the appropriate location.
  • Collaborates with orthopedic practices (Managers, schedules, etc.) to ensure seamless coordination of care for ortho patients and executive of STEEEP (safety, timeliness, equity, efficiency, effectiveness, and patient -centeredness).
  • Act as the traffic controller for orthopedic cases, closely monitoring the daily schedule and ensuring patients are promptly directed to pre-op areas and maintain a timely flow. Monitor the accuracy of case times and patient arrival times one week prior to surgeries, making necessary adjustments or updates as needed.
  • Able to work with Surgical Services leaders and schedulers to assure cases are scheduled with the correct procedure mnemonic, equipment, instrumentation, etc. Collaborate with schedulers on all schedule changes, identifying opportunities to rearrange cases or contact representatives when case times need adjustment.
  • Conducts pre- and post-operative education. Assess knowledge level, ability to understand and coping mechanisms of patient and support system and educate as needed.
  • Serve as an interface between the orthopedic team and the anesthesia department, facilitating clear communication and coordination during surgical procedures.
  • Regularly review block utilization and release, as well as utilization data, to ensure accuracy and identify any discrepancies that may impact scheduling efficiency.
  • Provide onboarding and training to new staff members joining the orthopedic team, ensuring their seamless integration and adherence to department protocols.

Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders, including patients, medical staff, and vendors.
  • In-depth knowledge of orthopedic procedures, equipment, and supplies to facilitate efficient coordination and communication.
  • An attention to detail to ensure accuracy in reviewing test results, equipment allocation, and scheduling.
  • Proficiency in utilizing scheduling software and other relevant technologies.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment and handle day-to-day issues with composure and problem-solving skills.

Education - Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing

Experience - Two years in clinical discipline preferred. One year in clinical discipline required with demonstrated clinical and leadership expertise.

Licensure - Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in New York or eligible to obtain New York RN licensure. Obtain CPR, and as needed ACLS, PALS, NRP certifications.

Physical Requirements - Ability to lift 20 pounds frequently. Moving, lifting or transferring patients and/or equipment may involve lifting of up to 50 or more pounds occasionally. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
