role and responsibilities

Under  general  supervision  of  licensed  personnel  the  Orthopedic  Technician  will  perform  a  variety  of  functions  in support and care of patients requiring orthopedic care in an outpatient or inpatient medical setting.   Strictly follows all practice policies and procedures, including all HIPAA related policies and procedures.

essential functions:

  1. Measures and fits Durable Medical Equipment (DME); instructs patients on proper crutch and cane walking.
  2. Corrects brace fitting and performs routine dressing  changes according to physician’s orders.  
  3. Assesses patient comfort related to cast and splints. 
  4. Assists with comfort measures and notification of appropriate staff.
  5. Responsible  for  reporting  on  the  condition  of  patient/client  to  the  appropriate  supervisor  and  other  staff  members.  Coordinates and assists with care as directed.
  6. Sets up surgical tables, instruments, and supplies required for specific operations.  
  7. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative area.
  8. Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies.  
  9. Sets up for casting procedures.   Applies a variety of plaster and fiberglass casting, splints, braces, soft goods and skin and skeletal traction.
  10. Ability  to  apply  a  wide  range  of  casting  and  traction  techniques  in  accordance  with  established  practices  and  physician’s instructions.
  11. Performs related tasks and assignments as necessary.
  12. May also act as a Medical Assistant based on clinic need and required certification.
  13. Complies with established organizational policies and procedures of WTMF.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

qualifications and education requirements

  1. High School graduate or GED required.
  2. Proof of certification from Orthopedic Technician School. 
  3. Maintenance  of  current  Cardio  Pulmonary  Resuscitation  (CPR)  for  HealthCare  Workers  or  Basic  Cardiac  Life Support (BCLS) certification for HealthCare workers.
