Job Description

The Surgical Orthopedic Technician prepares the surgical/procedural and post-surgical environment with essential equipment and supplies for the provision of care while assisting in optimal patient care and patient safety. The technician also serves as the technical expert for hospital personnel on matters related to orthopedic devices and equipment, and works independently to improve the organization of work for the team by continuously improving work flow.

Job Duties:

• Anticipates equipment needs for orthopedic surgical cases during and after surgery.
• Performs maintenance of orthopedic equipment, instruments and cast cart supplies.
• Assists in room set-up and cleaning between procedures.
• Provide quality orthopedic care for patients requiring immobilization including: applying, removing and assessing the need for change of all types of orthopedic immobilization devices; collaborating with orthopedic surgeons/staff in reviewing patient x-rays and in developing procedures for setting up aseptic fields, etc.
• Participate in the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Committee (QAPI).
• Educate patients/families regarding the application/wearing of orthopedic devices and serve as a resource for patients via telephone.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Travel to facilities on a need-be basis.

Skills and Qualifications:
• Knowledge of anatomy and medical terms, cast application and removal, sterilization, infection protocol


Requirements:
• One (1) year full-time work experience in a hospital, clinic or medical doctor’s office setting, working directly in the treatment of orthopedic patients(s)
• Cognitive skills as related to the position
• Department of Justice Background Check
• Satisfactory Completion of Health/Drug Screening
• Proof of legal US work eligibility
• Valid Transportation
• Valid CA Class C Driver’s License

Educational Requirements:
• Certification by The National Board of Certification for Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT).
