Oral Surgical Assistant I

We are looking for a diligent oral surgery assistant to support our oral surgeon before, during, and after each dental procedure. Your responsibilities will include receiving patients, viewing charts and beginning patient preparation. You will make notes about performed procedures, progress, recommendations, and other subjects in the patient's EMR chart. You must ensure that surgical tools are properly cleaned and sterilized before procedures begin. You may be responsible for tasks such as taking x-rays, processing items such as removable dental appliances and casts or impressions, checking vital signs or maintaining IV fluid flows during procedures. Some clerical work, including record keeping and handling phone calls may be necessary.
To be successful as an oral surgery assistant, you should be highly organized and attentive to patients' needs. An outstanding oral surgery assistant should have an excellent understanding of oral surgery procedures and exceptional hand-eye coordination.
Surgical Responsibilities:
  • Proper instrument cleaning in accordance with infection control and biohazard protocols
  • Autoclave operation and function
  • Surgical tray set up
  • Identification of instruments used in the clinic
  • Room set up/break down for IV anesthesia and surgery
  • Seat patient and perform pre-op setup
  • Review chart
  • Nitrous oxide set up
  • Properly position restraints
  • Support airway for sedated patients
  • Ability to circulate and retrieve instruments
  • Provide excellent patient care at all times
Non-Surgical Responsibilities:
  • Restock supplies and forms/handouts. Restock rooms
  • Take vital signs
  • Familiar with all forms and handouts (procedure-based, consent forms, etc.)
  • Aware of an in compliance with OSHA requirements (e.g personal protection)
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, filing and charting
  • Make follow up phone calls to patients
  • May take X-Rays
  • Properly closing and opening the office each day (Tanks, Suction, Xray)
  • Greet patients and make them feel comfortable
Experience/Education/Certification Requirements:
  • Training / education in oral surgery assistant program desired
  • Previous clinical experience desired
  • Basic life support (BLS) certification required
  • May require AART certification(s)
  • Great organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
  • Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.

Schedule:
  • Monday to Friday, 8-hour shift
Special Requirements:
  • Physical requirements include sitting, stooping, turning, standing, bending, walking, hearing, reading, writing and keyboarding, lifting up to 25 lbs.
