Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Optometry Assistant is responsible for assisting the optometrist(s) in the direct provision of primary eye care services to patients of the health center. The Optometric assistant is also responsible for sterilization, preparation and inventory control of optometric instruments and supplies.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Accurately intakes the patient's medical history including review of system and notes any drug allergies in the patient's electronic medical records (EMR).
+ Measures/records distance and near visual acuities and pinhole visual acuities, if needed.
+ Safely administers eye drops and/or medications as directed by Physician.
+ Performs color vision exams such as Ishihara or D-15 as needed.
+ Follows instructions given by physician during special circumstances or medical emergencies.
+ Prepares patient for testing and performs automated testing including autorefractor, HVF, etc.
+ Disinfects equipment before and after examination. Practices hand washing and standard precaution techniques in compliance with Variety Care policies and procedures relative to infection control, exposure control and safety issues.
+ Operates the autorefractor, chart projector, visual field analyzer, fundus camera, hand -held tonometer, pachymeter, topographer, and lensometer in an effective and safe manner.
+ Adjusts and repairs frames by replacing screws, temples or nose-pads proficiently.
+ Measures patient's bifocal segment heights proficiently.
+ Measures patient's papillary distance with and without pupillometer.
+ Assists patient select eyewear appropriate for face and prescription.
+ Understands the different lens options available for patients.
+ Orders glasses in a timely manner and verifies ordered prescription upon return using lensometer.
+ Serve as optometrist's chair-side assistant.
+ Maintains adequate optometric supplies and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes.
+ Pulls and files patient's charts as required and ensures all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed and filed.
+ Assist with various clinical and administrative functions of the health center as appropriate.

Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge:
+ High school diploma or GED. A two year Associates degree is a plus.
+ Paraoptometric Certification preferred.
+ Optical experience and/or American Board of Optician certification preferred.
+ Ability to attend to multiple tasks at the same time and to prioritize assignments and responsibilities to ensure compliance with established deadlines and protocols.
+ Effective oral communication skills are required to communicate with patients.
+ Trustworthy handling confidential information.
+ Able to work in an active and stressful environment.
+ Able to work with difficult patients from time to time.
+ Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.
ADA Requirements:
+ Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
