Description:SUMMARY:
The Certified Optometric Technician will provide support to all facets of the operation, including daily operations of examination areas, patient care, laboratory duties, screening, testing, and inventory controls, while maintaining the highest level of customer service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensures high quality patient care and customer service; explains and communicates to patients in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Ensures that patients understand and sign required consents.
  • Reviews patient information carefully and identifies special needs. Consults with the provider, optician, or management when necessary.
  • Completes necessary paperwork, obtains necessary consents, and performs screening and testing on patients. Prepares patients for treatment and assists doctors.
  • Promotes visual field testing and retinal screenings to eligible patients.
  • Performs Refractions.
  • Administers basic Visual Acuity (VA) assessments.
  • Performs intraocular pressure (IOP) tests with a Tonopen unit.
  • Takes Fundus photos.
  • Administers a Visual Field (VF) test.
  • Performs Flourescein Angiogram (FA) procedures.
  • Performs Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG) procedures.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic and dilation medications to patients.
  • Monitors and maintains daily patient flow.
  • Ensures a positive and professional environment where patients feel comfortable; prepares patients for treatment and assists doctors.
  • Understands ocular terminology and diseases and knows the ocular abbreviations.
  • Maintains a clean, sterile, and stocked exams rooms.
  • Orders and maintains clean and well-stocked examination area and equipment.
  • Maintains accurate and organized patient records.
  • Assist with training new employees.
  • Maintains an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor in accordance with Company policies. Keeps commitments and keep direct supervisor informed of work progress, timetables, and issues.
  • Maintains strict compliance with State, Federal and other regulations (e.g., OSHA, WC, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, DOL, HR policies and practices).
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements:QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED; minimum 1-3 years of related work experience in a medical office and/or retail optical store environment; or an equivalent combination of both education and work experience. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays. Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance (if required for assigned clinic).
DESIRABLE: Associate’s Degree; prior experience in the ophthalmic or optometric industry.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (preferred)
  • Valid Driver’s License may be required based on clinic location(s).

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES/TALENTS:

  • Team player and contributor coupled with excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to provide guidance to less experienced team members.
  • Requires knowledge of training practices, technology applications, and reporting systems; business correspondence and business reporting techniques; and business principles.
  • Knowledge of medical office and/or optical store operations, as well as knowledge of best practices.
  • Skills required include use of knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and use of standard office equipment.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, staff, vendors, or other members of the business community.
  • Ability to draw valid conclusions, apply sound judgment in making decisions, and to make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to direct the work of others and work as a Team Leader and Coach in attainment of goals.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Must address others professionally and respectfully by actions, words and deeds.
  • Detail oriented, organized, process focused, problem solver, self-motivated proactive, customer service focused.
  • Displays independent judgment by willingness to make timely and accurate decisions based on available information that is sometimes vague or limited in nature.
  • Ability to multitask effectively and work in a fast paced and sometimes ambiguous environment, without compromising quality of work.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and projects with limited direction, while understanding and contributing to the success of the assigned region(s).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • This is primarily an office classification. Temperature conditions are controlled with limited direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
  • Ability to travel to other site locations in a geography.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, see, talk and hear. The employee will frequently lift and/or carry reports, records and other materials that typically weigh less than 20 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, or crouch.
  • Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, and other standard office equipment.
