Location
This position is a full-time, hybrid-based position which will be located in our Louisville, Colorado office.
Position Summary
The newly hired Optical Engineer will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team on R&D projects and support development of new concepts and approaches for future development of the optical systems for spatially scanned laser addressing of cold atom qubit arrays.
Responsibilities

- Design of opto-mechanical assemblies
- Sourcing/Procurement of components
- Assistance with design verification, modeling and drawing approvals
- Generate and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECO)
- Troubleshoot technical opto-mechanical production problems
- Facilitate and participate in concept brainstorming and strategy sessions
- Influence and propel multi-functional team members to achieve stretch goals
- Work as a “hands-on” Engineer developing and troubleshooting product
- Responsible for engineering documentation, including but not limited to technical drawings, mechanical assembly packages, PCBA’s and electronic packages
- Solve complex problems and make sound design recommendations
- Provide technical assistance for troubleshooting and diagnosing design quality problems
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or Physics; post-graduate degree preferred. Minimum 2 years of prior engineering experience
- Strong technical background in optics
-Keen understanding of laser beam propagation, and various beam scanning method
-Design an optical system to achieve desired performance
--Gather requirements and propagate high level requirements to sub-systems using modeling
-Develop and implement test methods for laser beam propagation in optical system
-Desired: experience with laser beam characterization, spatial mode shaping, diffractive optical element, and/or spatial light modulation - Hardware skills:
-Prototype and production assembly and testing involving
--Fiber optics and fiber optical integrated devices
--Lasers and optics in free space
--Precision optomechanical alignment - Software skills:
-Optical system design and simulation
--Experience with Zemax, Code V or FRED Optical Engineering software to model sequential and non-sequential systems
-Troubleshoot technical problems with other engineering team members and support/lead root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action
-Data analysis with Python desired - Demonstrated ability to effectively share and communicate information with technical and non-technical staff
- Demonstrated ability to learn new and complex topics quickly
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with all levels of an organization in English; Professional-level communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work comfortably in a highly collaborative, cross-functional, team-oriented, and matrixed environment
- Desire and demonstrated ability to thrive and adapt and produce results in a fluid, dynamic, and fast-paced environment
- Passion for solving complex problems and challenges in a highly technical and scientific environment
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to effectively prioritize work activities and tasks
- Ability to travel domestically and (potentially) internationally up to 10%
- This role requires that you do not require sponsorship or a work visa transfer

Benefits
The targeted base salary for this role is $90,000 to $125,000 on an annualized basis plus all new hires are eligible to participate in our Annual Incentive Plan and are also eligible for Stock Option Grants.
