General Summary of Position
Medstar Health is looking for an Opthalmic Technician to join our team! We are looking for someone with technical skills associated with assuring the appropriate performance of all emergency equipment utilized and the analytical ability to identify and resolve clinical problems.
The Opthalmic Technician provides primary ophthalmic care to patients under moderate supervision. Performs complete ophthalmic history and preliminary examinations, subspecialty tests, and contact lens work.

Primary Duties:
Acquaints all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests. Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection. Following testing, advise as to who will see them next and make the patient comfortable during their wait. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required. Communicates with reception and lead Ophthalmic Technician to facilitate proper patient flow. Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, history (ocular and general), family history, and history of allergies and medications.
Audits clinical supply levels, communicating to Physician which items falls below par level. Troubleshoot instruments as necessary, replacing bulbs, checking connections, performing archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations, and reporting continued difficulty.
Participates in meetings/ on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Activity, Manual Lensometry, Confrontational Visual Fields, Stereo Testing, Evaluation of Motility, Pupillary Function Tests, Color Plates, Application Tonometry, Advanced Refractometry, Retinoscopy, Angle Assessment, Dilation of Pupils, Contact Lens Evaluations, Visual Field Testing, Optic Nerve Scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT), Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, A Scan and B Scan, Ophthalmic Imaging including Fluorescein Angiography.
Provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills and patient care questions. Covers front desk responsibilities as needed. Duties may include answering phones, scheduling and cancelling appointments, pre-registering and registering patients in Cerner, and preparing patient charts.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
2 years' experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or ophthalmic assistant.
Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) within 180 Days.
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within 180 Days.
Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred.
Associate’s degree in related field preferred.
