Port Discovery Children's Museum, one of the top Children's Museum in the United States and a top cultural institution in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, is seeking a skilled and motivated individual to join our Maintenance team as our Operations & Maintenance Manager. The Museum provides experiences that ignite imagination, inspire learning, and nurture growth through play.
Summary of the Job:
The Operations & Maintenance Manager helps us achieve our mission of providing a safe, smart place to engage in child-driven playful learning. This position is responsible for managing a team of 3 to 5 technicians, as well as identifying, planning, managing, and delegating exhibits and building repairs for short-, medium-, and long-term schedules. This position is categorized as "Essential Services" and must be available for on-site work in inclement weather.
This is a full time 40-hour per week position, with a Monday to Friday schedule. The museum can be open as many as 7 days per week. Therefore, we are looking for someone that is flexible for special events, weekends and evenings if necessary.
The salary range for this position is $65k to $70k, based on experience.
Sampling of Responsibilities & Duties:
- Adherence and support to the overall mission of Port Discovery to provide unique opportunities and high-quality experiences that make play accessible, educational, and fun for all; specifically, how it relates to operational excellence of out 90,000 square foot museum.
- Supervise full Technician Team, setting daily to long-term schedules and tasks.
- Develop annual maintenance plans, schedules, and improvement plans/projects.
- Log repair requests / issues in the Asana tracking system and monitor project statuses, prioritizing and resolving issues.
- Diagnose and resolve repair issues, using manuals or innovative solutions as needed.
- Address urgent repair requests from the museum floor.
- Supervise and work side by side with team members with complex repair projects.
- Delegate design/fabrication tasks to address recurrent maintenance or safety issues.
- Enhance and maintain workshop safety to meet OSHA standards.
- Work with Museum Leadership to identify and address exhibit and building maintenance areas for improvement.
Essential Qualifications:
- Associate degree; trade school certificate; BA or BS in project management, engineering, design & fabrication or related field; or commensurate work experience required.
- 6 to 10 years of relevant professional experience required.
- 2 or more years of management experience required.
- Proficiency in carpentry, metal work, plastics, AV systems, electronics and/or electro-mechanical repair required.
- Familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, and general maintenance procedures required.
- Extensive experience with a variety of maintenance tools and repair procedures required.
- PMI certification a plus.
- Experience with sculpting and molding materials like foam, resins, and silicones a plus
- Strong interpersonal, relationship building, and problem-solving skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Frequent standing and walking, moving about the Museum building.
- Occasional sitting for administrative / desk work, as well as use of normal office equipment.
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Climbing and crawling through tight spaces.
- Use of ladders and lifts to high elevations; ascend and descend scaffolding and stairs; carry equipment and supplies throughout the building. Fear of heights or confined spaces could create a significant hardship.
- Use of light power tools and operation of machinery.
- Requires protective clothing and equipment during exposure to machines, dust, chemicals and solvents.
- Most work must be conducted on-site; very limited remote opportunity.
