ABOUT THE POSITION
The Operations and Security Manager supports the Director of Operations to ensure effective operations, safety, and Security primarily during the Armory’s evening and weekend programs and events. This position provides a broad range of support to the Facilities and Security functions, with key responsibilities including hands-on supervision and support of program and event Operations and Facilities; execution of work requests, external traffic, and load in/load out operations; management and usage of building, security, and fire safety systems, equipment, and supplies; oversight of security contractor and other vendors; and assistance with policies, procedures, and adherence to federal, state, and local laws. The Manager is a key liaison between daytime weekday and evening weekend team members.
Due to the nature of this role and interaction with staff across the organization, this is a fully on-site role.Regular weekend and evening work is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for facilities maintenance and services primarily during evening and weekend programs and events, including organizing, assigning, supervising the execution of, and directly assisting with tasks when needed to ensure that work is completed in a timely and professional manner; hands-on physical tasks may include set ups, maintenance, and strikes for a wide range of building activities, assistance in the Drill Hall as needed or requested by programming and production, and monitoring and use of mechanical building systems as directed.
- Responsible for security and safety management primarily during evening and weekend programs and events, including supervision of posts and building perimeter, parking and traffic control, audience movement and access control, observing and identifying potential safety and Security risks, monitoring security camera feeds, providing support during incidents as needed, and ensuring building transition to overnight Operations and Facilities mode.
- In conjunction with the Director of Operations, manage the security contractor especially during programs and events, including serving as the security point of contact, providing direct security assistance, scheduling and training team members, evaluating performance, and participating in planning meetings and discussions.
- Serve as Operations point of contact during events or programs and assist the Director of Operations in maintaining collaborative working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Manage fire safety during programs and events, including operating the fire command center, complying with the Temporary Public Assembly (TPA) permit, and cooperating with fire department, law enforcement, medical, and other public safety officers for their inspections and in response to their requests for information.
- Assist with administration of the maintenance staff, including scheduling and coordination, timekeeping, time off requests, and maintaining roster of part-time staff.
- In conjunction with the Director of Operations team members, respond to off-hour emergencies remotely or onsite as needed.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

- Demonstrated responsiveness and accountability, as well as a service-oriented, hands-on approach to operations/security management.
- Demonstrated strength as a hands-on manager who leads by example with prior experience supervising, training, and assisting staff or contracted labor, as well as strong interpersonal, team building, and collaborative skills.
- Proven skill in handling diverse constituencies, managing concurrent tasks, solving problems, and responding expeditiously to immediate needs and incidents calmly and professionally.
- Demonstrated proficiency and accuracy using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other software, such as video surveillance programs.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with ability and experience in writing policies and procedures.
- Ability to work a five-day work week that includes Saturday and/or Sunday and evening/night hours; flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed and on an “on-call” basis.
- FDNY S-12, S-13, and S-95 licenses preferred, can be obtained while holding the position.
- Conversational Spanish is a plus.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years of Operations/Security management experience or the equivalent combination of experience sufficient to successfully perform essential functions of the job.
- Experience in cultural, educational, or large public access locations.
