Job Duties
Functions as part of Moncrief Cancer Institute Survivorship team in both in-house and mobile clinic settings. Participates in outreach activities to promote wellness and increase awareness of Survivorship Program in Community.

  • Provides individualized safe, evidence-based exercise training to cancer patients. Demonstrates principles of exercise and disease management as applicable to cancer patients. Progresses the patient appropriately and safely during exercise.
  • Provides education to the patient and family regarding the disease process, while being aware of the patient's/family's readiness and ability to learn.
  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments during the initial evaluation.
  • Identifies appropriate interventions based on the initial evaluation. Writes a complete plan of care, including specific, time-based goals for each intervention.
  • Continually re-evaluates the plan of care and exercise program to determine effectiveness. Utilizes critical thinking skills to monitor patient's progress. Reports any physical changes to the nurse navigator in a prompt manner.
  • Displays good knowledge of patient resources and needs.
  • Organizes patient treatment time efficiently. Provides patient education in a timely, organized manner based on the needs of patient and family.
  • Documents all aspects of the patient's care and continued need for exercise program in a legible, concise, accurate and timely fashion.
  • Assumes accountability for all actions in the workplace. Reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow-up action to rectify the error. Participates in performance improvement activities as directed.
  • Effective patient/family advocate. Responds to complaints in an appropriate and effective manner. Reports complaints to the Manager or their designee in a timely manner. Utilizes the chain of command appropriately to resolve patient, operational, or personal work-related problems.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required, and two (2) years of experience in clinical exercise or rehabilitation required. Education may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Personal Trainer Certification from an accredited organization required, i.e. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), required. American College of Sports Medicine Cancer Exercise Trainer Certification (ACSM/ACS-CET) preferred, or completion of certification within two (2) years of employment required.
  • Current certification in Adult CPR and AED or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC), required. Group Exercise Trainer certification, preferred.
