Job description

Job Summary
In a safe manner, monitor and inspect all plant equipment including gas/steam turbines, generators, boilers/heat recovery steam generator (HRSGs), transformers, pumps, condensers, switchyard and related auxiliary equipment. Operate local controls and devices for proper plant operation. Perform moderately skilled work in the checking, inspecting, repair, maintenance, installation and construction of plant equipment and structures. Perform moderately technical and skilled work in conjunction with electrical systems, analysis, detection and repair of single loop control systems, electronic devices, communication systems and instruments such as meters, gauges, and regulators. Perform technical work in chemical analyses, industrial hygiene and environmental testing and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment. Assist others in conducting tests, surveys and layout work. Communicate and coordinate activities affecting safe and efficient operation of plant in an often distracting and multitasking environment. Demonstrate ability to work with others at all levels.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1) Demonstrate ethical behavior and show strong leadership in safe and healthy work behaviors and environmental stewardship. Adhere to proper operating practices and procedures designed to prevent injury, illness and environmental noncompliance. Observe governmental and company environmental, safety and health regulations. Demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity and willingness to work and communicate effectively with all AEP employees and contractors.
2) Perform equipment checks to ensure safe and efficient operations during the start-up, operation and shutdown of turbines, generators, condensers, boilers/heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), boiler feed pumps, exciters, transformers, switchyard and auxiliary equipment. Operate valves, pumps, electrical disconnects, breakers and controls, etc. from remote locations as needed. Take appropriate actions in the event of abnormal plant equipment conditions. Monitor field controlling, indicating and recording devices, compares results with established standards and make adjustments as required based on operating conditions. Enter and review data in the logbook.
3) Monitor and respond to alarms and unusual conditions to ensure proper operation of equipment within established standards and reports irregular and abnormal operating conditions to supervision.
4) Maintain and monitor basic boiler water chemistry and other plant cycle chemistry by reviewing operational data and collecting and analyzing samples. Maintain and operate the water treatment plant. Analyze data such as chemical test results, conductivity, pH, flow and temperature readings, etc. and make appropriate adjustments. Operate and maintain precision laboratory and field analyzers with QA/QC standards. Gather inventory data on laboratory reagents, chemicals, records information and orders material as needed. Unload deliveries of chemicals and gases per site procedures.
5) Assist in monitoring, inspecting, installing, removing, testing, adjusting, calibrating, troubleshooting and repairing electrical, electronic, instrumentation and plant controls systems and components. Conduct simple electrical system interlock and circuit breaker trip checks to determine proper operational performance. Perform simple control system monitoring using a computer interface terminal. Assist in using elementary, schematic, wiring and control diagrams to locate, troubleshoot and repair control systems involving electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components. Use electrical and instrumentation test equipment to troubleshoot and calibrate plant equipment. Operate, maintain and repair medium and low voltage circuit breakers and associated equipment.
6) Operate hoists, fork-lift trucks, small tractors, aerial lifts, scissor lifts, mobile and overhead cranes and automotive equipment and inspects scaffold and rigging in accordance with AEP policies and procedures.
7) Perform minor mechanical maintenance work including, dismantling, rebuilding, adjusting, aligning, packing and cleaning equipment. Assist with repair of rotating equipment, valves, actuators, piping, etc. Operate welding machine and gas torch to cut, heat, braze and make tack and temporary welds, etc. Perform minor maintenance work on HVAC and plumbing systems. Properly use machine shop equipment, power and hand tools. Perform rough carpentry work and limited masonry work. Load, unload, move and handle materials, supplies and equipment.
8) Perform predictive and preventive maintenance work by inspecting, monitoring, lubricating, troubleshooting and testing plant equipment to determine conditions such as wear, corrosion and deposits. Perform inspections and corrective maintenance activities on plant equipment and components. Conduct chemical tests and inspections to ensure proper oper
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Work Experience requirement listed below: Must have performed the duties of & maintained all the qualifications, certifications & licenses of Operation & Maintenance Plant Technician Assc, or the equivalent & must pass an examination and/or demonstration as determined by the company Must have a basic knowledge of the heat balance systems and the effect of unbalances on operating efficiency. Must have the ability to direct and coordinate the work of employees and contractors.
Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. Possess the ability to communicate effectively with peers and plant management. Should have 12 to 18 months of power plant experience in operations, maintenance, electrical, instrumentation and controls in gas turbine/HRSG systems. Must have a basic knowledge of applicable operating and maintenance instructions and procedures.
Understand the care and attention required for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the equipment to which assigned. Must have basic knowledge of principles of operating the plant safely & efficiently during start-up, normal operation & shutdown of boilers,HRSGs,turbines,generators,condensers,boiler feed pumps,exciters,transformers & their auxiliaries & accessories. Must have the skills and knowledge of plant operations outside of the control room.
Must have basic knowledge and skills needed to analyze, interpret, calibrate and adjust plant instruments and controls, and be capable of detecting and making repairs to simple control systems and understand protective systems. Must have basic knowledge of chemical tests, procedures, reagents, etc. to perform chemical analysis, industrial hygiene evaluations and environmental sampling. Must have a basic knowledge of minor plant maintenance, materials, practices, tools, rigging, scaffolding and blocking involved in the work.
