Shift: Shift 1

Work Schedule: 8 Hr (7:00:00 AM - 7:00:00 PM)

Summary:
The Nursing Apprentice performs a variety of clinical and environmental tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Nursing Apprentice duties are of a technical nature requiring specialized training and skill. The training and skill level of the Nursing Apprentice is commensurate with their advancement through an accredited school of nursing. The Nursing Apprentice is a time-limited position that may not be held beyond 60 calendar days from the Nursing Apprentice/Nursing Externship Program start date. The Nursing Apprentice must demonstrate the ability to care for all ages in the clinical settings and participate in weekly classroom education. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
1. Assists the RN in the delivery of patient care: Reports to preceptor RN or designate for assignment of duties. Maintains a safe patient environment. Under the direction of the nurse, sets priority of duties based on needs of patient and unit. Under the direction of the RN, participates in the implementation of individualized plans of care. Assists patients in activities of daily living. Accurately obtains patient data and documents all care in the appropriate patient care record. Performs routine procedures, treatments and specimen collections. Demonstrates aseptic technique, when necessary. Assists RN or physician with advanced procedures. Assists the nurse in the management of uncomplicated tubes and drains. Performs specific patient care procedures such as blood glucose testing, specimen collection, etc. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific and population specific patient variables. Promptly reports changes in patient condition to the appropriate RN.
2. Transports patients and (other) items as needed: Assists with admission, discharge, and transport of patients. Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required. Obtains blood products, supplies and equipment as necessary.
3. Competently utilizes technology: Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the telephone and patient call system(s). Demonstrates proficiency in the use of Epic. Consistently documents in real time at the point of care. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of selected unit specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment as indicated on the Nursing Apprentice Skills Checklist
4. Maintains a safe, orderly, well-equipped environment: Keeps patient rooms safe, orderly, and according to unit routine. Independently orders, organizes, and restocks according to unit specifications. Replenishes patient room supplies. Maintains emergency supplies.
5. Demonstrates a professional work style in interactions with internal and external customers: Communicates all pertinent information to the appropriate assigned nurse throughout the shift and to the oncoming shift. Negotiates break time and communicates departure and return time per unit protocol. Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in work habits.

Required Job Qualifications:
  • Current enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate or Master’s entry-level school of nursing with an overall course grade point average of 2 or greater upon hire.
  • Completed a fundamental nursing course to include basic nursing skills, such as vital signs and ADLs.
  • Completed first medical/surgical clinical rotation.
  • Analytical ability.
  • Communication skill is required in order to lead and teach.
  • Interact effectively with others in difficult situations
  • The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter and retrieve data, and closely examine specimen, images or reports.

Physical Demands:
  • Lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom exceed 300 lbs.
  • Ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.
  • Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
