The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Nursing Mission is to build on a legacy of nursing excellence by caring with compassion, advancing the art & science of nursing, and advocating for the health of patients, families, and communities. The Critical Care Nurse Resident utilizes the nursing process as the frame of reference for practice as a professional Registered Nurse and provides direct patient care to patients and families. This is an entry-level nursing position for new graduate nurses. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader to the department.
The BIDMC Critical Care Nurse Residency is a structured, evidence-based program to support the newly graduated Registered Nurse (NGRN) who is passionate about critical care nursing. RNs with less than one year of experience may also participate in the program. The Critical Care Nurse Residency is designed to support the clinical orientation and transition of new nurses to the role of a professional RN. Those who are accepted into this program will be immersed into the critical care environment while also receiving extensive education, both at the bedside and off the unit. To optimize the experience, the NGRN will be enrolled in the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (ACCN) Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) learning modules, and also receive off-unit education with our Nurse Specialists and Unit Based Educators. Ongoing support and opportunities for clinical reflection are built into the curriculum. The NGRN will also be enrolled into a hospital wide, evidence-based Transition-to-Practice program consisting of monthly lectures by subject-matter experts on topics such as communication, conflict resolution, and patient safety. These lectures will be followed by a critical care NGRN cohort session to dive deeper into the topic, to complement clinical experiences and provide a forum for peer support facilitated by a nurse leader. Upon completion of this program, the goal is for the NGRN to feel confident and competent to practice independently as a critical care nurse.
