Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE


The Competency Specialist is a system level position serving the National Nurse Residency Program. The Competency Specialist offers a wide range of support to help meet the needs of the various Residency and Fellowship programs by providing clear and sustainable competencies that describe and measure key behaviors, knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for success as defined by the Program. Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for identification and development of clinical competencies. Under the direction of the System VP, Clinical Education and Professional Development, the Competency Specialist works with other SMEs, councils, committees, and collaborative group in the development and standardization of competencies in specialty areas and to meet the needs of the organization Creates systems and processes for monitoring, documenting and tracking competencies.


ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES


1. Acts as a subject matter expert on competency identification, content, procedures, approvals, application and impact on development programs.
2. Creates, modifies, and preserves processes, materials, and framework(s) used to identify specific knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes (KSAs). Prepares detailed behavior and performance criteria for each competency element, as well as the required training courses and on the job real work assignments to successfully achieve each competency element in the development framework.
3. Conducts research, observations, and interviews with relevant stakeholders for each specific program, utilizing this information to inform competency identification and development.
4. Contributes to competency based curriculum and individual development plans.
5. Identifies and differentiates competencies that are core versus advanced, aligning with the established competency model in use.

6. Identifies and verifies basic, core and common competencies at different levels within the various residency and fellowship programs; develops competency standards for safe, effective clinical performance. Makes necessary additions, amendments and enhancements to ensure relevance to the learners and the program(s).
7. Develops a comprehensive curriculum framework including all competency standards for the various residency, fellowship and nursing development programs.


Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Education, Training or HR/Organizational Development, or related field) required
  • Minimum five (5) years of education/healthcare related experience, required, with at least two (2) of these years related to Adult Education or competency development and assessment, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess clinical competencies, required.
  • Understanding of curriculum development, instructional design, and program management, preferably in a clinical education or professional development context, highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with competency models and competency development, highly preferred.

 

Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse License in one of the States that CommonSpirit
    Health operates or a multi-state Compact License.

 

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

 

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
    Ability to work independently in a very complex and challenging matrixed organization where deadlines and priorities change.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and best practices for health care instruction.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives/projects
    simultaneously with minimal direct supervision, including the ability to juggle short-term and long-term deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills. Able to research topics/issues quickly and efficiently given limited guidance and direction.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently. Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to interact positively with a wide variety of people. Strong collaboration and organization skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, orally and in writing. Able to effectively make presentations to various key stakeholder groups.
  • Requires the use of independent judgment to initiate and manage complex tasks to support a wide variety of training projects and initiatives of varied size and scope.
  • Works effectively with external and partner organizations, consultants and internal teams to coordinate competency related materials and ensure adherence to compliance requirements and practice standards.
  • Functions independently to plan and deliver program outcomes and needs to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Has a high attention to detail. Highly proficient computer and technical skills related to this work.
  • Able to work accountably and effectively as a part of a team and with diverse populations of people. Demonstrates cultural competency and the ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, and cognitive abilities.

Pay Range
$33.60 - $48.73 /hour
