Job description

The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff "for fit" makes significant contributions to Howard University's overall mission.
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Surgical Oncology Nurse Practitioner (NP) will function was an integral member of the care-giving team. He/she will function semi-independently in the outpatient clinic, and serve as a surrogate for the attending medical staff for in-patient services at HUH.
The NP is expected to demonstrate a high degree of clinical expertise in surgical oncology, and act as a resource to others requiring assistance with patient issues.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for providing limited supervision for assigned functions within a department.
Formalizes plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of these tasks.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • He/she is responsible for managing the daily needs of the inpatient services including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, discussion of management options, patient, family, healthcare provider education, health promotion, care coordination, and aiding in disposition and/or transfer of patients from the inpatient neurosurgical unit.
  • He/she is expected to display an advanced level of clinical knowledge, have exceptional communication skills, work closely in a multi-disciplinary fashion, optimize communication and collaboration between all members of the care-giving team, promote evidence based best practices, optimize safety and quality initiatives and maintain the highest elements of professionalism.
  • Documents and records progress notes and notifies attending physician of significant problems
  • Develops plans of care.
  • Intervenes in crisis situations or patient deterioration; provides routine and illness care
  • Provides comprehensive pre- and post-operative education and counseling to patients
  • Coordinate preoperative evaluations as needed
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining continuity of care thru post-operative follow up visits; responds to calls; educates, screens and counsel patients, facilitates patient referrals to appropriate providers and outpatient services
  • Maintains patient medical records
  • May develop policies/procedures; participates in or designs changes in the system of care delivery
  • Participates in medical student, resident, and health professional teaching; acts as a clinical consultant to peers and other health care professionals
  • Performs all other Nurse Practitioner duties as required
  • Review patient test results and responding appropriately
  • Handle telephone calls from patients, family members, referring physicians, and hospitals.
  • Assisting the physician in the hospital occasionally when needed
  • Provide follow up patient visits and see patients independently when indicated
  • Completes thorough history and physical examinations, providing a detailed and accurate history, examines and treats patients, orders and interprets laboratory tests and imagining studies; formulating diagnoses and treatment plans and prescribing medications and monitoring responses to medications and adjusting accordingly.
  • Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Prescribe medication dosages, routes, and frequencies based on patients' characteristics such as age and gender.
  • Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests such as complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays).
  • Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Counsel patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and herbal remedies.
  • Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks, and educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
  • Provide basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of life threatening emergencies.
  • Document all pertinent patient data in the medical record and collaborate with other health care professionals in meeting patients' health needs.
  • Adhere to and follows guidelines and standards of practice of the organization governing Nurse Practitioner. Serve on assigned Health Center or university committees as necessary.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master's or Doctorate's degree from accredited nursing program and 2 years of nursing experience.
Must have active DEA, CS, ACLS/ATLS/BLS.
In some cases, years of related work experience may be substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.
