Job description

This position is for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Division of Pediatric Dermatology. An APP in this position will be responsible for providing dermatologic care in the outpatient setting to pediatric patients in the dermatology clinic at Children's National Hospital (CNH) and CNH regional outpatient centers. Specifically, the candidate will participate in diagnosing, developing treatment plans, and prescribing appropriate medications and treatments. This position will include an intensive training period and an expectation that the candidate will subsequently participate in didactic sessions and case review. This is a medical dermatologic practice working with children-- there is no cosmetic dermatology. This role also includes some independent procedures such as steroid injections, cryotherapy, biopsies after appropriate training. Previous experience as an APP in pediatrics and/or dermatology is preferred, but not required.

The Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse who practices within their scope of practice as appropriate in their jurisdictional area and in accordance with their organizational Medical Staff Bylaws. The provider is responsible for the management of care to patients including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. Provides leadership and consultation with their respective clinical area through participation in division/department initiatives and mentorship of others. Participates in division/departmental and organization wide initiatives to represent Advanced Practice and leverage the role of the Advanced Practice provider.
All advanced nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. Children's National supports the development of APRN relationships within the community; specifically those relationships associated with the health and well being of the community at large. Credentialed by the medical staff and licensed to function in an expanded nursing role as an Advanced Practice Nurse to a group of patients. Acts in a collaborative and integrated practice with a physician and is responsible for the management of care to patients assigned including: diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and the assessment, implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. All activities are performed within the guidelines of protocols agreed upon by the authority of licensure, the medical and nursing divisions, and the medical staff bylaws. Provides leadership and consultation within a specialty area through participation in division/department initiatives and mentorship of others. Participates in Divisional/Departmental and organizational wide initiatives to represent Advanced Practice nursing, and leverage the role of the Advanced Practice Nurse.

Minimum Education
Master's Degree Master's Degree Master's or Doctoral degree as Advanced Practice Nurse from an accredited University and eligibility for medical staff credentialing (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Strong knowledge of clinical specialty and services.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice (Required) And
CDS and DEA in state(s) of clinical practice. BLS certified. (Required)
Functional Accountabilities
Clinical
  • Assess, diagnose, monitor and promote clinical status of each patient utilizing evidenced based practice and medical knowledge.
  • Develops appropriate plan of care.
  • Writes patient care orders, prescribes therapy, and provides necessary home care orders as needed.
  • Identifies significant changes in patient status using physical exam, lab values, diagnostic tests, and patient/family input.
  • Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Performs procedures as needed after obtaining appropriate credentialing.
  • Participates in and leads multidisciplinary patient care and planning conferences.
  • Is a clinical resource for patient, parents and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicates and escalates clinical/administrative issues as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with nursing, medicine, and other members of the healthcare team to regularly ensure quality patient care.
Administrative
  • Serves as a clinical preceptor to APRN or PA students.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for staff in patient care issues.
  • Provides formal/informal educational presentation to staff on areas of expertise.
  • Participates in quality improvement work for the department.
