Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the unit's Director or designee, the Manager is responsible for the efficient, effective running of the assigned units. This includes, but is not limited to management of the budget, provision of patient care services, performance improvement, compliance with regulatory standards, and business development. In collaboration with other members of the management team, this individual is responsible for the ongoing assessment of the quality of patient care services provided in department.

  • Effectively allocates financial, physical and human resources to ensure that operations are effective and efficient.
  • Implements effective cost containment strategies.
  • Advances organizational mission.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge base in nursing practice and its clinical application to the patient population served in the unit, including the operation of equipment, and policy and procedures used in the delivery of patient care in the unit. Assumes responsibility for the overall quality of nursing care provided.
  • Maintains communication with other members of the management team regarding potential/actual problems or concerns, and with Medical Staff issues. Assists with establishing and maintaining communication channels with Medical Staff and other departments in the Hospital.
  • Operates across organizational boundaries and recognizes implications of actions and plans.
  • Ensures Department/Unit provides positive customer service.
  • Identifies critical changes required to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Establishes clear Operational Unit goals and hold staff accountable for their responsibilities and performance.
  • Complies with professional regulations.
  • Makes timely, effective decisions. Delegates responsibility effectively.
  • Motivates staff to be effective team members.
  • Fosters development of Department/Unit employees to enhance their ability to contribute to meet business goals.
  • Holds others accountable for reaching a given standard of performance.
  • Appropriately alters supervisory/management style to suit the situation and individuals involved.
  • Facilitates timely performance reviews.
  • Develops effective quality processes to improve quality of the department and hospital.
  • Facilitates staff education regarding current quality initiatives.
  • Communicates directly with the director/manager on unit and staff performance issues needing attention.
  • Maintains effective utilization and maintenance of manpower, equipment, and supplies.
  • Participates in cost containment programs as applicable to services provided.
  • Actively participates in appropriate Department and Hospital committees and ensures that unit personnel are involved in this process as appropriate.
  • Maintains own professional growth through appropriate organizations, workshops, seminars, and other educational endeavors. Maintains awareness of current developments and trends in nursing practice.
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following hospital and nursing standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations.
  • Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
  • Responsible for care of patients in the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period.
  • Triage OBED pregnant patients adhering to Medical Screening exam guidelines.
  • Fetal strip interpretation using external and internal monitoring methods.
  • Managing high risk patients including by not limited to: preterm labor, preeclampsia/eclampsia, gestational diabetes, placenta previa, and placenta abruption.
  • Performs and documents patient assessments and reassessments following Nursing and Departmental P/P, using appropriate techniques for data collection and analysis, at regular and indicated intervals
  • Provides IV therapy management and performs venipuncture as needed for lab draws per physician orders. 

What qualifications you will need:

Education/Skills

  • Associate's degree required; BSN preferred. BSN will be required within 3 years of employment.

Experience

  • Leadership and management experience is highly desirable.

Licenses, Registrations and/or Certifications

  • Texas State RN license or compact license is accepted; Texas State RN license required 30 days after hire; current BLS required; ACLS, BLS and NRP required; Specialty Certification is required / maintained
