Basic Job Function and Responsibilities
To manage on a twenty-four hour basis the clinical, operational, financial and personnel activities of a nursing unit.
Job Duties
- Demonstrates administrative skills which include selecting and training new employees, evaluating, coaching and disciplining employees.
- Develops and implements unit goals.
- Directs unit quality improvement activities and monitoring to assure quality of patient care and employee safety. Assures unit compliance to The Joint Commission and other regulatory standards. Develops, implements review and revises standards, procedures and policies for the unit and notifies personnel of the changes.
- Displays the willingness and skills to confront and resolve problems and conflict situations.
- Identifies educational needs for unit personnel; assists in planning and implementing orientation and staff development programs.
- Keeps abreast of new developments through participation in conferences/educational programs.
- Prepares, monitors and analyzes unit budget, and coordinates cost containment efforts on the unit.
- Provides support and encouragement to allow employees to achieve their full potential.
- Seeks opportunities for improvement, growth and change; maintains a strong emphasis on results.
- Serves as a resource person to unit personnel and employees in other departments. Assists with problem identification, development of written care plans, difficult procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing - Required.
- Bachelor's degree - Required.
Experience
- Progressive nursing experience with minimum of 3 years - Required.
- Previous management experience - Preferred.
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with people and demonstrates expertise in leadership and management skills - Required.
- Effective critical thinking skills and knowledge of statistical concepts - Required.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize - Required.
- Team oriented with excellent interpersonal skills - Required.
Certification(s), Licensure(s) & Registration(s)
- Licensure in Iowa as a Registered Nurse - Required.
